 Gir National Park is famous worldwide for being the last sanctuary for the Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). The population of these lions once plummeted to near extinction, with estimates of just 20 individuals surviving in the early 20th century. However, due to extensive conservation efforts, their numbers have steadily risen. Today, Gir is home to around 600 Asiatic lions, making it the only place in the world where you can see these magnificent creatures in the wild.

The Asiatic lion is smaller and has a less developed mane compared to its African counterpart. It is known for its unique social structure and tends to live in smaller prides. Despite their lower numbers globally, these lions are thriving in Gir National Park, thanks to its extensive conservation programs, wildlife protection laws, and eco-tourism initiatives.
