Can A Standard Barcode Scanner Read QR Codes?
The short answer is that standard barcode scanners cannot read QR codes. Here’s why:
- 1D Barcode Scanners: These scanners are designed to read 1D barcodes that consist of vertical lines. They can only scan the typical UPC or EAN barcodes that are commonly seen in retail stores. QR codes, on the other hand, are 2D barcodes and require scanners that can interpret both the horizontal and vertical data matrix.
- 2D Barcode Scanners: These scanners are equipped with more advanced technology, including imaging sensors that capture a QR code’s entire structure. The two-dimensional patterns (both horizontal and vertical) are decoded and converted into useful data.
So, while 1D barcode scanners cannot read QR codes, 2D barcode scanners are specifically designed to read QR codes, along with a variety of other 2D codes.
