In 2025, HH MUST PREVENT CHRISTOPHER MUNDIA'S CORRUPTION IN STATE HOUSE.
As we approach the end of 2024 and the beginning of 2025, we extend warm seasonal greetings to you, President Hakainde Hichilema. In this spirit, we wish to share a New Year message aimed at encouraging and strengthening your resolve to combat both past and present corruption.
We commend your efforts to tackle corruption, particularly with the recent reshuffle of Permanent Secretaries, many of whom were involved in corrupt activities. However, we are concerned that your response to corruption among some ministers and aides in State House may be too slow or hesitant.
One critical example is your legal advisor, Christopher Mundia. It is essential to recognize that Mundia has become the new Kaizer Zulu within State House. Your predecessor, Edgar Lungu, faced significant issues due to Zulu's notorious behavior, which ultimately contributed to his downfall. Lungu ignored public calls to act against Zulu until it was too late. We urge you not to repeat this mistake.
Mundia's corruption cases are numerous and well-known within UPND circles. For the sake of clarity, we will highlight one significant case involving the fertilizer company ETG. After the Patriotic Front lost power, Mundia positioned himself as a key ally for ETG, blocking investigations into missing fertilizer that was supposed to be delivered to the Ministry of Defence.
In 2019, the Ministry of Defence ordered 105,000 MT of fertilizer from Russia for US $72 million. Unfortunately, the fertilizer arrived late and was intended for use in the following farming season. ETG proposed a swap of this fertilizer for a debt owed to them by the Ministry of Community Development, but the US $43 million balance was never received by the Treasury, raising serious questions about the transaction.
Despite ETG's previous ties to the PF, Mundia has ensured they continue to receive significant contracts under the UPND’s FISP program, remaining the only supplier from the PF regime.
Additionally, Mundia has been implicated in schemes targeting foreign investors, working with a senior official at the Drug Enforcement Commission to seize their funds and force them into settlements, often demanding a commission of up to 30% payable to select law firms.
Mundia’s influence appears to be causing significant unrest within your administration. He openly boasts about his untouchability, suggesting that those who wish to see him removed may instead face repercussions.
This raises a crucial question: Why is President Hichilema treating Christopher Mundia as an untouchable aide?
There are rumors of a deeper connection between you and Mundia, stemming from a past covenant with his late father, who served as LAZ president. It is said that your commitment to protect Mundia may explain your reluctance to act against him, despite the damage he is inflicting on your government.
Notably, Lemmy Kajoba was recently dismissed as Inspector General of Police after confirming that investigations into Mundia had been put on hold at Mundia's request. This reinforces the troubling dynamics at play.
As we celebrate this festive season, we hope you will take decisive action in the coming year. We wish you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year, Mr. President. It is vital to make the tough decisions necessary for the integrity and success of your administration.
