by Rashmi K. Writer
Is it your first time for a modular kitchen? Yes! We’ve got you covered. A modular kitchen design consists of pull-outs, cabinets, countertops, layouts etc. Before you start to shop for your modular kitchen design or consult an interior designer, it’s important to keep some pointers in mind before venturing out in the Kitchen market. A number of details must be considered in this process. There are a number of decisions to be made from choosing kitchen layout to picking kitchen cabinets.

Here is the rule-book for first-timers looking to start with their modular kitchen design and plan. You want to make every nook and corner that serves a purpose.

Identify your kitchen work triangle:

A kitchen work triangle consists of a refrigerator, sink and a cooktop. A major part of kitchen layout consists of how these three essential items interact with each other i.e. the location to easily do the cooking, cleaning and food storage areas without overcrowding the kitchen. It is a kitchen design guideline to help plan efficient workspaces and clear out traffic lanes in the kitchen. Draw up a rough sketch of your kitchen to have a better idea about Kitchen layout. A general rule mentioned by the National Kitchen And Bath Association is to let a distance o f 4to 9 feet between each leg of a triangle.

Ideal countertop height:

The standard counter height of a kitchen is decoded on the average height of our people in the country. For a comfortable countertop to work with, the height is usually between 32 to 33 inches. Your designer can adjust the countertop height to meet the preference of the family. Ensure that the kitchen cabinet and countertop are not too much in height because then it's difficult for shorter people to reach upper shelves. You may choose an Italian  modular kitchen as this is quite in trend.

Choose colours wisely:

Always remember that it is you who needs to maintain the kitchen in the longer run. Indian kitchens can consist of a lot of tough stains, so all-white kitchens are best to be avoided. All white-kitchen demands high maintenance and consistent cleaning. But this doesn’t mean you blindly go for bright hues. In summers, brighter colors attract more heat. To maintain the overall harmony, you can mix and match two colors. Always make sure, your kitchen colour goes well with home decor also. Your color scheme adds a finishing touch to your kitchen space. Your designer may offer a predefined set of colour combination to choose from to make your decision easier.

Ventilation is key:

Cooking generates a lot of heat in the kitchen. So, make sure your kitchen has a lot of ventilation. You can opt for a chimney or an exhaust fan or both to vent out the frying  fumes out of the kitchen area. Ideally, there should be a washing area or a balcony in the kitchen area so that there is enough space for fresh air. This also makes sure the smoke in the kitchen doesn't collect inside your house and you have a proper air circulation even when you’re not cooking.

Kitchen Lighting:

Nothing can beat the natural light through the window to brighten up the kitchen. But for the evenings and night time, make sure there is great lighting in the kitchen. Overhead lighting can brighten the kitchen where a lot of cooking happens. Under-cabinet lights are becoming popular as they provide direct lightning to the countertop which is great for cooking at night.

Safety comes first:

When it comes to the kitchen, the foremost thing should be safety. You should think of all different ways to keep the kitchen safe. There must be proper gas piping with no possibility of leakage, curved countertop edges, anti-slip flooring, appliances must be close to the switchboard and there should be enough space between the stove and sink.

Don’t ignore corner spaces:

Often, while renovating or designing a new kitchen we tend to ignore corners thinking it as of no use. But this dead space can create a lot of space. There are plenty of options in the market to make the best use of the corner space. You can introduce blind corner cabinets to ensure there is complete utilization of your kitchen corner space. It is best advised to seek the help of professionals when it comes to choosing modular kitchen design, furniture stores to look for and choosing Italian modular kitchens. Professionals can make the best use of spaces and help personalise the layout. As there is nothing such as too much space available in the kitchen. Indian kitchens are well aware of that.

Trash it right:

Have you seen the kitchen cabinet under the sink which always has a built-in dustbin? Well, it's the most accessible trash in the view. These are easy to clean as well. You can ask for a separate bin for dry and wet waste. If not, you can keep the trash outside the kitchen in a garbage container.

We hope this basic rule-book will help you to design the best modular kitchen layout. Modular kitchen is an expensive investment so research while doing your interiors for the kitchen or seeks help from a professional. There are many options coming these days to make your design personalized, eco-friendly and functional so that you don't miss out on anything.
