7 effective principles every aspiring public speaker should know about

by Jaques Montegolifier Chartered Accountant
Whenever you watch celebrities, politicians, or business leaders speak on television, you may wonder they are always at ease. Were they born as great leaders, or did they have to undertake some training? There are media training for celebrities available across the world, which makes them fluent in public speeches. However, some are indeed born with talent.

If you wish to ace public speaking, you can follow these principles:

1)    Perfection: People are always keen to hear out someone enjoyable, relaxed, and comfortable. We have no issues being ourselves in our everyday conversations. But the moment we stand to deliver a speech, something goes off. People focus on the public at the expense of speaking. You need to do the opposite to become an effective public speaker. Consider it as a conversation between the audience and you. The moment you have a relaxed conversation with one or two listeners, you become an effective speaker. Talk to people directly and build a connection with them.

2)    Perception: Even the most acclaimed speaker makes errors. The only thing you can do after committing a mistake is to keep going. Do not stop, unless the error was truly shattering. Also, do not apologize to the audience for minor slip-ups. Mistakes can work in your favor as it allows you to connect with the listeners. People do not want to hear perfect speakers. They will relate to someone real.

3)    Visualization: Media training for celebrities includes one crucial aspect, visualizing what you speak. Salespeople envision them closing the deal, executives picturize themselves delivering an impressive presentation, athletes imagine reaching the finishing line or breaking a record. Anxiety gets the better of you during a presentation or speech. The best way to fight back against it is to practice and gain confidence. If you visualize consistently, you will soon conquer your anxiety.

4)    Discipline: Your goal should not be of becoming a public speaker. The goal should be of becoming an effective speaker. We often take communication for granted since we speak to several people every day. When your prosperity gets linked to how well you perform in front of a group, you must give the task the same attention.

5)    Description: Listeners respond well if the message is personal. Try to add some facts or begin with an anecdote. Individuals love hearing other's experiences, such as triumphs, tragedies, and everyday humorous incidents. Stories, in fact, gives credibility. You can engage more audience. It makes the listeners warm-up to you and also appeases you, especially breaks down nervousness.

6)    Inspiration: Public speaking requires you to shift your attention from yourself to the audience. The objective is to benefit the listeners through your speaking skills, which include factors such as teaching, motivation, and entertainment. Ensure the purpose gets engraved in all presentations and preparation.

7)    Anticipation: Public speaking includes one formula – less is generally more. No audience leaves the space with a comment such as, ‘I hope they had spoken more.’ Surprise your audience. Always keep your speech crisp and short.

If you master the first six principles, you already have the audiences’ attention and interest in hand.
