6 Ways Shorter Men Can Dress To Look Taller

by Vikram Sharma Textile designer

There are some simple ways for a man to dress taller, and the formula for dressing taller isn't that difficult to learn. It's simply a matter of following a few simple guidelines when shopping for clothes like your office wear or casual wear such as printed lungi.

Of course, a kind-confidence, a smile, and a good intention will always triumph over any dressing-well formula.

The way we dress is a journey, not a destination. It can be overwhelming to try to do everything perfectly at once, and when we stop enjoying the process, the art of presenting ourselves well becomes a burden rather than an art. So, with a light heart, we take a look at a few ways to dress to appear taller.

We all know that (1) wearing vertical stripes lengthens the silhouette, (2) standing up straight can add an inch to your height, (3) bolder blues / lighter blacks look better on shorter guys than very dark colours that "shrink" the overall appearance, and (4) heels on shoes lift the body, so we'll skip over these obvious points.

Here are six creative ways to dress to appear taller:

1. Wear Fitted Clothes

Most of us have seen this photo before, but it never fails to make an important point. Without a doubt, baggy clothing will stretch the silhouette horizontally, making a person appear wider rather than taller. When you dress, consider lengthening (rather than widening) yourself from head to toe. It's eye-opening to see how a shorter man transforms when he ditches his baggy clothes in favour of clothes that reveal a streamlined silhouette.

2. Add Accessories Positioned High-Up on the Body

The goal is to draw other people's attention to your upper body, creating the illusion of greater height. Hats, glasses, lapel pins, tie pins, and pocket squares are examples of fun accessories to wear. A plethora of accessories, on the other hand, can create an eccentric look. Three or four classic accessories should suffice.

3. Ditch the Belts, Long Hair, and Waistcoats (Vests)

A horizontal belt is put on. The horizontal line formed by the belt visually divides the body in half.

Waistcoats or cotton vests shorten the body by creating a very busy middle section that draws attention away from the overall vertical line.

Long hair (with the exception of a top knot) conceals the neck, which lengthens the body.

4. Keep the Waist Button (Button Stance) On Your Coat Positioned Above The Navel

Choose jackets with a high waist button or button stance, which draws the eye higher up on the body and makes the legs appear longer.

You'll notice that the button stance on a jacket above is unusually high, which helps him appear taller.

5. Wear Shorter Jackets, and Have No Break on the Pant Legs

A suit jacket should usually only cover the buttocks. A slightly shorter jacket, on the other hand, exposes more of the legs, and slightly shorter pants, on the other hand, exposes more of the shoe; both of which create a continuous, unbroken body line with more of the body show... This, in turn, gives you the appearance of being taller.

6. Wear Monochromatic Colors

Wearing colours from the same colour spectrum prevents the body line from breaking (due to the distraction of different colours) and lengthens the silhouette from head to toe.
