6 Reasons Why You Should Use Vinegar in Laundry

by Elisa Roy Senior Editor

The objective of anyone doing laundry is probably to have their clothes come off with a perfectly bright color, a pleasant odor, the best appearance, and matching looks for whoever will put it on their body.

The same goal applies whether the individual is doing the laundry themselves, or using a professional laundry service in the USA like Spotless.

However, there is no denying that the real work in producing the perfect laundry involves the washing process, which our findings show can be significantly improved with the use of vinegar. Therefore, we will, during this article, reveal the benefits of using vinegar in the laundry process.

First, Let’s explain what we mean by vinegar.

Vinegar, as used in this article, refers to white vinegar, a by-product of the second fermentation of dilute distilled alcohol. The alcohol could be made from grain or the starch from food items such as rice, barley, corn, or even potatoes.

Distilled vinegar, also called Cleaning Vinegar, is ideal for laundry since its four-to-seven percent acidity is usually less acidic than cider vinegar.

6 Reasons Why You Should Use Vinegar in Laundry

  1. Better Results than Harsh Chemicals

Instead of using commercial laundry chemicals, that sometimes shorten the garment lifespan, using inexpensive vinegar means you’ll naturally get more compelling results. Generally, using white vinegar will whiten, brighten, reduce odor, and soften clothes.

Note, however, that if you must use cider vinegar for laundry, diluting the solution with water is necessary to avoid staining clothes. In other words, if poured directly on clothes, cedar vinegar could harm fabrics in the same manner as harsh chemicals.

For that reason, garment experts while speaking with clients on our laundry android app or laundry iPhone app highly recommend sticking with white vinegar.

  1. Replace Mildew Odor

If you’ve ever left a load of wet clothes in the washer or laundry basket, you must have noticed that there are mildew growth and an accompanying moldy smell. Have you tried banishing the odor using aggressive methods such as running multiple wash cycles?

Well, if the mildew and the moldy smell is still not that strong, you can try these steps:

  • Fill the washer with hot water

  • pour two cups of distilled white vinegar

  • complete a full washing cycle.

Afterward, run a second full washing cycle with detergent added, and watch your laundry come out without a trace of mildew and the moldy smell.

It is noteworthy, though, that our clients who use either laundry android app and laundry iPhone app can set washing instructions to ensure that their clothes are washed in the manner that they choose.

  1. Whiten Clothes

Rather than convention bleach, you can improve whitening on laundry through the use of white vinegar. The acetic acid content of white vinegar is strong enough to dissolve alkalines left on garments by detergents, and yet mild enough that it doesn’t have any side effects.

For the best results, you can add one-half cup of vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser or do so manually at the onset of the rinsing cycle.

You can also trust vinegar to help you deal with dingy clothes if they’re made of 100% cotton. Depending on the number of grey clothes that you want to whiten, you can add anywhere between half to one cup of vinegar to a large pot of water.

Next, heat the water till boiling point, soak the materials overnight, and then wash the next day, in the same manner, you would any other laundry.

  1. Prevent Underarm Yellowing and Odor

To remove perspiration stains and odor on clothes, you only need a spray bottle filled with undiluted white vinegar. The goal is to spray the solution inside the underarm areas for at least ten minutes before the garment is added to the washing machine.

If you notice that the fabric still feels stiff before washing, break up the residue using a soft-bristled brush. Doing so will allow the vinegar to have a broader effect, thus helping to prevent underarm yellowing.

  1. Wipeout Hem Marks

Either because of rapid growth or getting undersized garments, you may at one time or the other need to let pant hems down, and when you do hemlines, often leave a mark.

To erase the tiny holes or hemlines, use distilled white vinegar to moisten a white cloth. Then place the white cloth under the fabric while ironing the fabric. Also, remember to add a pressing cloth to the top of the material to prevent scorching.

  1. Maintain The Color of Dark Clothing and Remove Lint

Often, you may notice dark clothing becoming dull as a result of soap or detergent residue. You can prevent the dullness by adding one-half cup of distilled vinegar to the final rinse cycle for dark clothes.

Additionally, the same quantity of vinegar to the rinse cycle will still prevent lint and pet hair from clinging to clothes after a wash, even if you had mistakenly washed them alongside some lint-producing garments such as a towel.

Rounding Up

The usefulness of vinegar to getting laundry done the right way cannot be overemphasized — however, other factors, such as the vinegar quantity and the nature of the fabric, must be duly considered if you will get the right results.
