A London secret gem, this Georgian house in Spitalfields is in the little black book of a self-respecting stylist. Dennis Sievers' home recreates the family world of the Huguenot silk weavers from 1724 to 1914, captured in carefully designed interior sketches in more than 10 rooms. Huguenots are French Protestants who fled persecution in Catholic France and were transferred to London. Looks, sounds, and even smells enliven this time capsule, an intriguing installation by the late American artist Dennis Sievers, who designed it to make you feel like you've just intruded on your family's everyday life. Chair wigs, half-eaten dishes, or a flickering fireplace add to the mood. There is a tour led by a curator, but the space is very moving when seen silently by candlelight at night. When Londoners want travel corrections without leaving home, they end up at Daunt Books, Marylebone's fabulous independent travel bookstore. 24 hour bagel bakery

Locals make cocktails for Beigel Bake, the legendary 24-hour pretzel bakery on Brick Lane. This inner venue has been serving traditional Jewish pretzels daily since 1974 and is popular with clubbers and shift workers looking for lunch. The oldest pretzel shop in town offers both import and online delivery. The East End of London has long had a love affair with Jewish food, and the pretzels are legendary here.
