6 Key Tips to Ride a Sports Bike

by Sudarshan Venu TVS MD

A sports bike ride can add thrill to your long trips or daily commute, but with great power comes great responsibility. Riding a sports bike without any basic knowledge can create certain challenges in many ways. It is best to keep a few things in mind while riding a sports bike. Your riding position will depend on the kind of bike you are riding, but there are some general rules that every rider has to follow. Here are some of them:

1.     Do Not Lock the Elbows

You should not keep your arms straight or elbows locked while riding a motorcycle. Keep them a bit bent so that your arms act as natural shock absorbers for the upper body. Locking your elbows will make them vulnerable to injury because they won’t be able to absorb shocks from the road. Though motorcycles have shock absorbers, this method provides extra safety.

2.     Keep Your Back Straight

Though it may become tough after a certain point of time to keep your back straight constantly, it is okay to take breaks. But it is highly recommended that you keep your back straight while riding a sports bike. Many bikers have experienced this. Most discomfort depends on how you keep your back straight while riding a bike. Do not confuse keeping the back straight with sitting upright. Remember, the arms must be a bit bent and the back straight. Height also plays an important role in the riding stance.

3.     Follow Basic Racing Position

To be as aerodynamic as possible while riding a sports bike at high speeds, one needs to get low and lean forward on the bike to the knees at a 90-degree angle. While doing this, your hips must be at a 75-degree angle. Racers mostly use this riding posture to gain more control.

4.     Keep the Front Part of your Feet on the Foot-peg

While riding a sports bike on a race track, you end up shifting your body continuously on both sides. While doing this, you take the corresponding knee out while resting the feet on the foot pads. If you keep the front part of the feet on the foot pads, it will allow you to be more in sync with the overall body movement.

5.     Grab the Fuel Tank With the Thighs

To get rid of the wrist pain grab the fuel tank firmly with your thighs when you lean forward this will take off some weight of your upper body on your arms and wrists. You can also try grabbing the fuel tank with your thighs while braking braking as it helps to maintain the stability of the motorcycle.

6.     Wear Appropriate Clothing

Wearing proper clothes while riding a bike, whether it is a TVS Apache RTR 160 4V BS6 or TVS Apache RTR 310 BS6, is quite essential. This is because it not only provides safety while riding but also offers comfort while riding. Experts highly recommend that the rider not wear loose clothes as it makes the rider vulnerable to wind buffeting. Wearing body-fitting riding gear or clothes along with gloves, a jacket, and boots is vital.

One must follow these tips while riding a sports bike to stay in control of the ride and stay safe. Getting comfortable while riding a sports bike demands a knowledge of a basic set of rules and practice.
