Ever wonder how rugs are crafted? You would be surprised there are six different ways that a rug can be made. Different carpets have different styles of weaves. But odds are that you are unaware of which procedures of making a rug are used in production of specific carpets. Here are all the ways that a rug can be made possible by other rug makers and manufacturers.

1. The braided method

This is one of the simplest and most traditional ways of making a rug. These rugs contain two or more strands of yarn. One strand goes over and under the other to create a braid, like how you would braid your hair or a rope. Then, the rug maker pulls the free strand over the thread in the next weft or warp until the area requirements of the rug have been fulfilled.

2. The hand knot method

If you have seen an authentic Persian rug before, odds are that it was created by using this method. It isn’t surprising that a large rug of great quality can take over a year to craft. Rug makers and artisans stretch yarn right over a loom to form vertical columns, which are called “warps”. Horizontal rows of yarn are known as “wefts”. Different patterns are made on a rug through different hand knotting techniques. Oriental, Persian and Tibetan rugs are three notable rugs that are hand knotted.

3. The hand hook method

When people buy hooked rugs, it is like buying a painting that goes on the floor. Artisans stretch yarn over a loom, like the hand knot method, but this time, the artisan uses a hook to pull thread in areas of the rug where they want specific colors to go, used to create designs by making loops on the frame. Artisans can do this to make symmetrical patterns or to create their own unique designs.

4. The hand tuft method

Like the hand knot and hand hook method, hand tuft method starts with stretching thread over the frame. Instead of using knots or a hook, a specialty tufting tool is used to punch hooks or knots through yarn rows. By doing this method, the rug will look finer and more durable. Edging and shearing the rug is the last step to making a quality rug with this method.

5. The flat weave method

For this method the interlacing of wefts and warps are not involved in the process of making this kid of rug. Using a special machine, two layers of yarn are pressed together to form the wefts and warps without the need of threading them together. This method creates a thin rug, but the effectiveness in making rugs with these machines is very high in quality. Flat weave rugs might require a rug mat to be placed underneath, so that the rug itself has more cushion.

6. The loomed method

When you buy hooked rugs or hand knotted rugs, you can tell if they are made by hand.

However, loomed rugs are made by machines called power looms, which can be assisted by humans or completely automatic.  Power looms are also used to craft clothing, blankets, and other tapestry. The artisan does not have to create tufts, knots, or hooks in the rug’s frame. For older looming machines, the artisan is required to mechanically direct the needle where he or she wants it to go.

Now that you know all the techniques used to make fine rugs, you can narrow down your search for the right rug for your home or apartment.
