5 Ways of Determining if a Diamond Ring is a Counterfeit or Real

by Manish Jewels Jewelers
If you are unfamiliar with the components and structure of a diamond, you can be duped into believing that a gemstone is a diamond. Unfortunately, most people have lost money on fake diamonds due to the inability to distinguish between a counterfeit and a genuine diamond.

You can avoid such an issue by learning effective ways of detecting a counterfeit diamond. Here are some of the proven and tested methods used by the experts.

Water Test

This simple water test will determine if your diamond is real or not. Take a normal-sized drinking glass and fill it with water to its ¾ level. Cautiously, drop the stone into the glass. If the gemstone sinks to the bottom of the glass, it is a real diamond.

If the oval cluster diamond ring floats either above or underneath the water surface, that shows it is a counterfeit. Real diamonds have a higher density. So, this water test will show if your stone has that density.

Fog Test

The fog test is another suitable method for exposing fake diamonds. When conducting this test, hold the ring or diamond between two fingers. Breathe on it with a puff of air to form a light fog on the diamond.

Once you have done that, closely watch how fast the moisture on the diamond dissipates. If the fog clears off within seconds, that is proof the diamond is real; if it takes time, it is fake. Diamonds are good heat conductors, so they disperse heat quickly to clear the fog in seconds.

Check Diamond’s Setting and Mount

The easiest way to determine the worth of diamond or solitaire rings in Dubai is by checking their type of mount and setting. Due to the costly price tag of diamond rings, a genuine one will be set on a high-quality setting.

The jewelers will use materials such as yellow gold, white gold, platinum or halo setting or side-stone setting rings. You can check inside the ring’s center for markings describing the setting used for the diamond. For instance, the notes 10K, 14K and 18K indicate the type of gold used. PT Markings refer to platinum.

Heat the Stone

Diamonds are made of strong material, which is unresponsive to excessive heat. To check if your diamond is real with a heat test, take a glass and fill it with cold water. Wear fireproof gloves and use a set of pliers to hold the stone. Take at least 40 seconds to heat the stone and immediately drop it into the cold water. A stone with weaker components will shatter. A real diamond will remain intact.

X-Ray Examination

If you need a thorough method for determining if your diamond is real, consider conducting an X-Ray examination. However, you must send the stone to a diamond laboratory for testing. Their machines will reveal whether the stone comprises a radiopaque or radiolucent molecular structure. Real diamonds are radiolucent, while fake ones like crystals and cubic zirconium have radiopaque elements.
