Choosing the right doctor and med care for your family is a bit different than doing the same for yourself as the search gets more challenging. After all, when you’re looking to secure your whole family there’s more pressure and expectations. And you obviously want to make sure that your family gets the best medical care available. That said, there are several different aspects that you need to consider when choosing your family doctor and the medical centre/hospital you want to put your trust in.

1. Availability and vicinity

Some of the first factors that you need to check when considering a family doctor are how available they tend to be during the week. The whole point is to find a doctor who’ll be able to see you in one to two days, if not the same day you make a call. Waiting for weeks and even months to get the appointment is hardly worth it. Furthermore, just like availability, location of the doctor’s office/hospital/medical centre may play an important role in making your final decision. Of course, you may be able to compromise and accept a half-hour drive, but a 2-hour drive is not exactly the best solution for when you need to get yourself and/or your family to the doctor.

2. Address the receptionist’s mood and attitude

It’s very important that you also do your picking based on the vibe that you get from the receptionist. In general, a moody and unfriendly receptionist doesn’t really speak positively about the doctor and the medical care provided in the institution. Not to mention that being greeted by a negative attitude when you or someone in your family needs medical attention is rather unpleasant. This is especially true if you have young kids to worry about as kind receptionists can make a world of difference for their peace of mind, as well.

3. Check out the hospital/med centre

The next step in choosing the best medical care for your family is assessing the professionalism and efficiency of the hospital or medical centre where the prospective doctor works. Obviously, you won’t be able to suddenly unearth any dirty secrets, but you can easily see whether the work is properly streamlined as well as get the info about the equipment and departments available in the institution. For instance, Darlinghurst Medical Centre is a great point of reference if you can’t consider that particular centre in the first place. So, pay attention to the available services and tech that makes the institution in question stand out in a good way.

4. Think about the ease of communication

It may be a bit challenging to use the ability to open up to the doctor when you’re choosing someone to care for your entire family, but if the doctor feels easy to talk to and you don’t get the anxiety from just thinking about opening up about your issues, the chances are that the rest of your family will feel the same way as well. But, if possible, definitely have every member of your family talk to the prospective doctor just to make sure that everyone feels comfortable in the doc’s presence. This is very important for younger kids, but other difficult ages including teenagers and the elderly, too. They all need to trust this doctor and feel fine with opening up to them.

5. The doctor should never rush you

Aside from being able to open up easily and communicate whatever’s wrong to your doctor, they should also take the time to listen to you and make a careful diagnosis. At no point should you feel rushed, ignored, neglected and/or disrespected? This is paramount when it comes to finding the best person for treating and caring for your entire family. Otherwise, a visit to the doctor can become an even more stressful occasion than it already is, considering the reasons why one may need to go to the doctor in the first place. That said, make sure that the person you decide on is kind, patient and nice. After all, that’s part of being professional as well.

Remember that there’s no need to jump the gun with making this kind of a decision. After all, getting the right medical care for your family will affect all of your lives considerably. In that respect, take your time and discuss every little detail with other family members. You may also want to get the feedback from your friends and other patients about certain cetres and doctors once you narrow down your search.
