5 Tips for Cutting Concrete by Hand
by Cutting In Core Drilling SydneyCutting concrete by hand can be tricky but it is something our concrete cutters in Sydney are experienced in and can complete a professional job every time.
If you want to cut concrete by hand, follow these five tips below.
1. Ensure you have the right equipment
To do a good job, you need a decent handsaw that can cut concrete. You are best to look for diamond blades. Although they are more expensive than corundum masonry blades, they will do a better job.
You have a choice of two diamond blade: dry-cutting and wet-cutting. Dry-cutting blades use a serrated rim to stop waste from building up and to reduce heat from the blade. They work well when you want to make deeper cuts a little at a time.
Wet-cutting blades can have a smooth perimeter, or they sometimes have teeth. They are better than dry-cutting blades for reducing the amount of dust that is created. They also work quickly, and the water keeps the blade cool.
2. Measure and score
It is important to know where you want to cut. Mark it out with pencil and then score the area to allow you to get a more precise job. You can either do this with a saw or chisel and sledge.
3. While you are working
The tools are there to help you so let them do the hard work. You must not force or push the blade into the concrete as the saw’s weight and sharp blade can do it for you.
If you have chosen to use a dry-cutting blade, pull it back about every 30 seconds to avoid overheating. You don’t need to switch it off, but it shouldn’t be penetrating the concrete.
4. Get the best from your tools
Make sure you know exactly how your tools work. If you are using a dry-cutting blade, then you can use it dry, but water may also be used. When you opt for a wet-cutting blade, water must be used.
5. Make sure that you are protected
You should never risk your safety and therefore you want to make sure you have safety goggles and gloves for protection. Depending on the method you are using, you may also need respiratory protection, especially if a lot of dust is present.
