5 Things You Are Doing That Are Affecting Your Mental Health

by Andrea McGeorge Counselling Counselling Maple Ridge

Mental health problems can manifest without you realizing it. Sometimes, we just chalk it up to fatigue or stress. But these can be signs of more serious mental health concerns. And because these are invisible pain and invisible injuries, you might not want to seek help until it’s too late.

There are certain things we do that could affect our mental health by Counselling in Maple Ridge. Here are just a few of those things:

1. Bottling your emotions up.

Many of us are taught at a young age not to show emotions. Showing big emotions is often considered a weakness and a nuisance so many people end up suppressing their emotions. They feel ashamed of having these big emotions.

But not having a proper outlet for these emotions can cause them to just get stored and locked up in you. Those pent-up emotions could explode one day and you will have even more difficulty handling them.

2. Finding wrong coping mechanisms.

Another mistake people make that affects their mental health is looking for the wrong ways to cope with their mental stresses. Vices like drugs and cigarettes can endanger your health. We weren’t taught how to process big emotions in a safe manner.

3. Comparing yourself with other people.

You might have heard of the old saying “Comparison is a thief for joy”. If you keep on downplaying your progress and comparing what you have with that of other people, you will never be at peace with yourself. You will forever have something bad to say about yourself and that isn’t good for your mental health.

4. Not being physically active and not spending time outside.

Do you often spend your time sitting in your home doing nothing to elevate your blood pressure and increase those feel-good hormones? A lack of physical activity can impact mental health negatively as well. So does staying cooped up in your home.

This is why many therapists recommend getting some outdoor time. Go for a walk to boost those serotonin levels in the body. Getting much-needed outdoor time can also help in increasing vitamin D levels, which can promote a better mood.

5. Isolating yourself from others.

It’s not uncommon for people to want to isolate themselves whenever they are feeling stressed out. You can take the time to just rest. But make sure you are not cutting people from your life. Social isolation can fuel mental health problems.

Counselling in Maple Ridge is one way of coping with your mental health problems. It’s not just for people with diagnosis.
