5 Things To Do Before New AC Installation

by Kevin Harris UGI Heating Cooling & Plumbing

Almost 50% of the energy bill is directly related to heating and cooling systems. And that is not a good sign if you want to avoid unwanted expenditure.

Thus, getting the heating or cooling system replaced is the only viable solution you are left with. But changing the entire system without careful consideration won’t do any good.

If there are any flaws in the installation, then not only you’ll suffer inadequate cooling but you’ll also need to bear a big loss in terms of huge electricity bills and frequent maintenance.

5 Things To Do Before New AC Installation

1.  Check Air Vents and Ducts

Vents and ducts should be inspected thoroughly. Congested ducts and vents can cause pressure problems, wasted energy, and damages to the new unit.

Along with this, if ducts have any leaks, you might face an uneven cooling problem. Thus, before installing a new AC, get it thoroughly checked and repair all the necessary parts.

2. Check Spacing Between The AC Unit And The Wall

Before installing a new AC, make sure that there is adequate space between the inner and outer units of the space.

Having a space of at least 15 cm between the indoor AC unit and the wall is considered ideal.

This is necessary so that the optimum airflow is maintained.

3. Calculate the Correct HVAC System Size

For any HVAC system to work perfectly, two things should be taken into consideration:

A. Estimation for tonnage coverage based on the square footage of your property.

B. Climate where your property is located.

And considering these two scenarios the following pointers can be referred for HVAC installation:

  • 1.5 tons – 600 to 1100 sq.ft

  • 2-tons –    901 to 1400 sq.ft

  • 2.5-tons – 1201 to 1650 sq.ft

4. Check Energy Consumption

The whole point of replacing the previous HVAC system was to save energy costs. Thus, getting an Air Conditioning without checking if it’s energy-efficient or not, will be a foolish decision.

The Energy Efficient Rating(EER) is usually between 8 and 11.5, the higher the better. Install a system with the highest rating possible. But be aware that systems with higher ratings cost comparatively more.

5. Check Location Of Outdoor Unit

For optimum functioning of an AC unit, the outside unit should be in open space with no hindrance to the heat dissipated by the condenser.

Also, it should be placed on a flat surface. And never forget to get it fixed precisely. The most critical parts of an AC unit are in the outside unit. So for it to be stable is extremely important.
