5 Simple Care Tips to Make Your Mattress Last Longer
Many sources
have likened buying a mattress to buying high-end products like cars and
houses. And that’s reasonable, because a mattress is not something you buy
often, and it can cost a fortune, especially those of high quality.
Usually, buying a good-quality and
durable mattress will make you enjoy it for up to 10 years. However, no matter how long (or
short) your mattress is ordinarily meant to last, you can increase its lifespan
by several years more, depending on how well you care for and maintain it.
To help you get
more value for your mattress shopping money, here are 5 simple care tips to
make your mattress last longer:
1. Use a mattress pad
Buying a new mattress
gives you this constant feeling of wanting to lie on it: it’s fresh, spotless,
and smells nice. However, resist the temptation of using your mattress bare, or
laid with just some thin sheet.
One good way of
caring for your mattress and ensuring it lasts longer is using a mattress pad.
Covering your mattress with a protective pad defends it against all sorts of
things: dust, dust mites, moisture, dirt and stains, sweat and body oils, and
so on.
Get your mattress
a comfy protective pad and you’ll thank yourself over a dozen years later.
2. Clean regularly
You want to
ensure you have a regular cleaning routine for your bed and beddings.
Firstly, you
want to ensure you wash your bed sheets, bed cover, and other beddings
regularly – and change them weekly. Don’t forget your mattress pad too. Wash it
few times a year.
Also wash the mattress
itself several times in a year (especially if you’re not using a mattress pad),
with just water and soap. No chemicals – they’ll instead reduce the lifespan of
your mattress.
Finally,
whenever your mattress gets stained, you should clean the stain immediately,
with a damp cotton cloth and mild soap or detergent.
You should also
vacuum your mattress regularly to keep it fresh and clean – and allergen-free.
This will help you remove dust, dead skin, pet dander, and dust mites.
3. Rotate and flip
This is one of
the best ways to care for your mattress
and make it last longer than it ordinarily would, and that’s why manufacturers
recommend it a lot.
When you sleep
and sit on the same parts of your bed for years, those frequently used parts
will naturally wear faster than other parts. To reduce the rate of wear and
tear, and to ensure the mattress wears evenly, you should frequently rotate and
flip your mattress – every 2 weeks in the first 3 months, and every 2 month
afterwards.
4. No pets
Your bedroom
should be sacred enough to be out of bounds to pets, not to talk of your bed
itself. Your lovely furry friend has (animal) dander, an allergen
that should be kept out of the room by all means. You don’t want those
collecting in your bed. Create your pet’s space, and teach it to respect your
bed as your personal space.
5. No jumping
Yes, I agree,
this is such a party pooper, but if you really want your mattress to last
longer, you’ll not let anyone jump on it – child or adult.
Jumping on the
mattress will destroy its inner composition and even the bed frame. If you must
jump on a bouncy surface, by all means get a trampoline.
Follow these simple
care tips, and your mattress will serve you loyally for years on end.
