Walking is the simplest form of exercise. It is recommended by every health professional that even if you can’t exercise regularly, walking for half an hour daily can minimise most health problems. This is especially advised to elders who are given healthcare at home. Since elders cannot partake in heavy activities, it is the best option for them to take a walk every day. It has several benefits. Here are 5 reasons why elders should do it:

       1.   It Improves Cardiovascular Health

Cardiovascular problems are common in the elders of the family. The risk of cardiovascular diseases can be greatly reduced by daily walking. Routine walking can also lower blood pressure and improve circulation. Walking only for half an hour a day can greatly reduce the risk of stroke in older women. It is crucial to walk every day to keep the heart healthy.

       2.     It Strengthens Joints, Muscles, and Bones

Walking is not as impactful as other exercises, but it is still considered a full-body workout. It benefits your bones, muscles, and joints, all at the same time. As a regular activity, walking lubricates the joints and keeps them functional for a longer time. Walking also supports the movement of bones and muscles. Overall, walking delays the ageing of the bones, muscles, and joints. It also reduces the risk of arthritis and hip fracture.

       3.     It Helps Fight Off Diseases

Even if a person walks for 20 minutes a day, it can greatly improve their health and ward off many diseases. Walking reduces the chances of chronic illnesses, including many types of cancer. Since the body is always in motion and the muscles are working, a person prevents many diseases and various types of body aches caused by a sedentary lifestyle. Being in front of a laptop all day long has exacerbated this condition a lot more. Walking, especially for the elderly, can reduce the risk of many such diseases and keep them healthy.

       4.     It Improves Sleep

Although “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise,” is a nursery rhyme but it true irrespective of the age of the person. Many people, especially the elderly, suffer from a lack of sufficient sleep. When the body is not fully rested, it becomes susceptible to many diseases because it is perpetually exhausted, making it difficult for the body to fight the antigen. Lack of sleep can also be caused by a lack of physical activity. Simply walking for half an hour daily keeps the body active and ensures that you are exhausted by the end of the day for a good sleep. If someone’s sleep cycle is in shambles, simply going for a walk every day will gradually ensure that their sleep cycle is perfect again.

       5.     It Delays Dementia

Walking is not just good for your health, but also for your brain. Walking can be a way for the elderly to stay mentally sharp. When their mind is continuously active, it delays cognitive decline and/or dementia. Older men and women who walk have recorded Alzheimer’s disease in fewer cases or is less severe than those who do not walk.

Most health professionals recommend that walking is best when it is done in the morning. Take the elderly at your home for a walk every day in the morning. It will tremendously benefit you and them.
