5 Most Common Cranes Used in Construction Industry

by Rohil Sharma Search Engine Optimizer
Construction industry makes the use of a wide assortment of equipments and machinery which helps in performing different jobs/tasks with an ease and perfection. One of the most common used machinery is a crane. A crane is a lifting machine that works with the use of cables and pulleys for lifting huge loads to and from desired height. It is important machinery which is used to lift and lower the materials. If the same task of lifting and lowering is done by human hands, it will take a lot of time and cost.

These construction cranes can lift tons of material and up to a certain height which depends upon the type of crane used. To meet diverse specifications of the industries, different types of cranes have been invented. These cranes are efficient in performing specialized chores. In this post, I have listed five most commonly used cranes along with their uses:

1. Tower Cranes

Tower crane is a modern version of balanced crane. Used generally in the construction of tall buildings and skyscrapers. Tower cranes provide a perfect blend of height and lifting capacity. Most commonly it is fixed to the ground but in some cases, it is attached to the sides of structures also. The operator of this crane sits in a cabin at the top of tower attached to the turntable.

To hook and unhook the loads, the operators work in combination with a swamper. These cranes don’t have a movable base. The base of tower crane seems like a long ladder, while the boom is perpendicular to the base.

2. Hydraulic Truck Cranes

Hydraulic truck cranes are mobile cranes that can lift tons of material using hydraulics. These are used in the building of major projects like buildings, bridges, roadways, and airports etc. older model of hydraulic cranes include two engines. Modern hydraulic cranes are usually search engine machines, with a common engine powering crane and undercarriage both. The upper portion is powered via hydraulic run through the turntable from the pump mounted on the lower portion.

3. All Terrain Cranes

These cranes are multi-functional cranes designed particularly to be operated on both off-road and smooth highways at a speed of 40mph. Unlike hydraulic truck cranes, all terrain cranes have two engines. The crane has hydraulically operated winches and a telescopic boom. Different models of this crane have different load handling capacities.

4. Rough Terrain Cranes

A rough terrain crane is generally mounted on an undercarriage with four rubber tires which are particularly designed for lifting and lowering operation. It can also be considered as a special mounted crane. The crane has its application in both off-road and rough terrain. Outriggers used with these cranes have the functionality of leveling and stabilizing the crane for hoisting. Like the crawler crane, it also has a single engine to power crane and undercarriage both.

This crane is different from others in the way that the engine is mounted in the undercarriage rather than the upper portion. The main use of it is in the construction of bridges and large construction projects where high lifting capacity is required.

5. Telescopic Cranes

This kind of crane provides a boom that comprises a number of tubes which are fitted inside one another. A hydraulic mechanism associated with the crane extends or reduce the tubes to increase and decrease the total length of boom. Telescopic crane has its application in rescue jobs, short term construction projects, lifting the boats in or out of the water.

Apart from aforementioned, other type of cranes include mobile, telescopic, truck mounted, loader, overhead, level luffing, railroad, crawler, floating, side lift, aerial, self-erecting, hammerhead, gantry, deck, bulk-handling, jib, stacker, vehicle mounted, and carry deck cranes etc. If you need anyone of them but you don’t have enough bucks then no need to purchase as there are many company offering Cranes on Hire service. With wide use in construction industry, these cranes have become important asset. No matter which crane is used, it saves a lot of time, money, and manual efforts.
