5 Japanese Language Tips to Make You Sound Fluent

by Prerna Mehta Author

So, have you been learning Japanese for a while now? Do you think that you are ready to get the fluent tag yet? You may want to make sure of your Japanese skills to be called fluent in the Japanese language. Besides taking up a Japanese language course, it is very important to know certain tips and tricks that will help you sound fluent in front of other Japanese speakers. Therefore, here we are with 5 Japanese language tips to make you sound fluent and natural, mainly in natural conversation.

  1. Ignore using the phrase ‘watashi wa’

This phrase can be the biggest clue in exposing your secrets. The moment you use this phrase you will indicate to your Japanese counterparts that you are not fluent but a beginner in the Japanese language. As you must have learned in your Japanese language classes that this language is extremely contextual in which the element implied by the context may lose its meaning during the conversion. Japanese speakers don’t use ‘watashi wa’ in their sentences unless they are unsure of the context.

2. Ditch ‘anata’ too

Like watashi wa, anata too can expose you to native speakers. Being told to anata may sound a bit rough to Japanese people. Therefore, if the context allows, drop using anata just like watashi wa. If your sentence really requires you to use the word ‘you’, it is better that you address the other person by their name. You may feel a bit strange in the beginning, but you’ll get used to it quickly.

3. Use emphasis particles

Use -yo to end your sentences to emphasize your point. However, depending on the context of your conversation, if it is a casual one, use dayo in place of desu. It’s very difficult to explain with logic but the use of -yo will make you sound more friendly and lively. No textbook will teach you when, where, and how to use this emphasis word, you kind of develop the feel to use it.

4. Use of E- to

If you are a fan of anime or other Japanese dramas, you have probably heard of this one before. The use of E-to at the beginning of the sentence allows you to have some time to think before responding to difficult statements like the use of ‘err’ in the English language. But be mindful of its overuse. This is helpful in situations where someone asks a difficult question to you.

5. Equip yourselves with more neutral forms of verbs

Another clue that gives you away as a beginner in the Japanese language is the usage of desu, masu in your conversations. Use neutral forms of verbs more often in casual conversations. Many Japanese language courses in Delhi includes modules to teach neutral forms of verbs to their students. This routine can help a student sound more confident and fluent during a conversation in the Japanese language.

To conclude

Anyone can learn Japanese, but to be fluent you need certain tricks folded up your sleeves for various difficult situations you might encounter in your Japanese speaking journey. Following these tips will definitely take you one step ahead of others. Remember to include these tips with your regular Japanese language classes in Delhi.
