Whether you bought a fixer-upper and are ready to start making improvements or you have lived in your home for a while and want to do some upgrades in order to make the most of your living space, you may wonder how you can afford what you want. You may be surprised to discover that many home improvements are reasonably priced. If you do the work yourself, you can save even more money. Here are five home improvements you thought you couldn't afford, but you probably can.

1. New Flooring

If your home has 30-year-old linoleum, icky self-adhesive tiles or stained, smelly carpet, you may want to replace the flooring. There are several affordable flooring options that will vastly improve the look and function of your home. Vinyl plank flooring is growing in popularity. It looks like wood but is easier to clean and less expensive, explains Her Money. You can install it yourself with just a few tools. A miter saw, rubber mallet, tape measure and a few other supplies are all you need. New carpeting is also affordable. If you want someone else to do the installation, you could lower the labor costs by removing and disposing of the old carpeting and padding yourself.

2. Painting

If you have called to get a price quote from a house painter, you might have been surprised by the price tag that was in the thousands of dollars. Although painting your home's interior is not hard, it is time-consuming. If you have more time than money, you could save several thousand dollars by painting your rooms yourself. Do not scrimp on the quality of the paint. It is easier and faster to paint with high-quality paint. Consider painting most of the rooms in your home the same color. This allows you to get a larger bucket of paint at a lower per-gallon cost. Choose quality brushes or rollers.

3. New Cabinets

Many homes lack sufficient storage space. If your cabinets are old or dated, you may want to replace them with something more modern. Big box hardware stores, as well as discount stores, often get affordable cabinets that you could install yourself. If you are handy with power tools and saws, this is a project you can do. Because cabinets are bulky and heavy, it is a good idea to do this type of project with another person who is comfortable with DIY projects. If you do not want to replace your entire cabinets, consider just redoing the doors. You could get new cabinet doors or refinish the existing doors.

4. Sauna or Hot Tub

Instead of paying for a night in a pricey hotel, you can get the same experience at home when you install a 110V hot tub that doesn’t require you to add any plumbing, digging or special electrical outlets. However, to do this, you will still need to make sure that your electrical panel has the capacity to add this appliance. Your city may require a permit and inspection for installing this type of fixture. If you have a deck or enclosed patio, these are great locations for a hot tub. If you have just had a master suite added to your home, you may want to reserve space in it for a hot tub. However, much like other water features, you will still require some maintenance. According to DocDeans Pools, an expert in swimming pool repairs in Ocoee, FL weatherization, heating and cleaning are essential services to keep in mind.

5. Beautiful Landscaping

Depending on the size of your yard, professional landscaping could cost a few thousand dollars. Ongoing lawn care, pruning and tending will add more. You can do this yourself with some basic equipment and supplies as well as plenty of elbow grease. Begin by removing weeds and dead vegetation. Find out which varieties of plants grow well in your area. Native plants are always a smart choice. They will be stronger, grow vigorously and offer more resistance to pests. Consider asking neighbors for cuttings or splittings of their plants. Add some mulch or compost or a border of pretty pebbles or rocks to finish the project.

Updating your home is more affordable than you think. By taking on one of these five relatively simple projects yourself, you can save money and enjoy a more comfortable living environment. Now is an ideal time to invest some money in one or more of these five home improvement projects.
