5 Fun Renovation Ideas for Big Families

by Reggie Moore Professional writer and proto entrepreneur

Sitting at home with your family can be a lot of fun. Still, with a few key renovations, things could be even better. Have you been thinking about which project you'd like to tackle next? If you've got a large family, then these projects ought to keep you busy.

Turn Your Detached Garage Into a Home Theater

Detached garages can be a fun project all by themselves. However, you don't have to use the space to store your cars. How about converting it into a theater with luxury home theater seating? Of course, you'd need to live somewhere with a suitable climate. A nice workshop would be another way you could utilize the space. Either way, you've got plenty of options.

Choosing a Foundation:

Be careful when selecting the site of your detached garage. The foundation must be on stable ground. Otherwise, over the years, it'll start to sink. We'd suggest speaking to a surveyor before breaking ground on anything. That way, you won't waste a bunch of time on an unviable endeavor.

Should You Insulate the Space?:

Insulation can be costly. So, lots of people choose not to install it. However, if you happen to live somewhere with cold winters, you might regret skipping it. Without any insulation, it would be riding inside the garage during the winter. You'll have to install some if you'd like to use the space year-round.

What Kind of Audio-Visual System Should You Use?:

That'll depend on how much space you've got to work with. Let's say you've got a little over 12 feet from the front to the back. In that case, we'd recommend using a projector system. You could install it on the ceiling. If you've got less than that, you might want to consider a large-screen TV. Those tend to work better with smaller spaces.

Convert Your Basement Into a Game Room

Does your home have a full-sized basement? Is it finished? If so, then you've got the perfect space to create a game room for the family. With one of those, everybody will want to hang out at your place.

Arcade Games:

As long as you've got room, some classic arcade games would be an amazing addition. Think about how much fun it would be to get home after work and play some pinball. Who do you think would have the high score in your family?

Darts:

Darts can be both friendly and competitive. Does anyone in your home love to place bets. If so, place a wager on a game of darts.

Pool Tables:

Nothing is cooler than a pool table in the basement. Putting one of these down there would automatically make your home the place to be.

Card and Board Games:

Sometimes, people like to be a little more social. A table where you and the family can play cards could really tie the room together.

Relax Beside Your Newly-Built Backyard Pool

Pools have always been one of those things that people love to have. There's an obvious reason for that. With a pool outside, you can quickly dip in to refresh yourself. Plus, it's a great social spot. You could invite the whole neighborhood over to your place.

BBQ Grills:

Nothing is better than chilling by the pool with some freshly grilled food. You could recreate that experience every weekend. By installing some nice BBQ grills, you could host a cookout whenever you'd like.

Hot Tubs:

The only downside to a pool is that it gets cold in the winter. Unless you are a fan of ice baths, they aren't much use at that point. However, you can get around that. Install a hot tub. That way, you can relax all year long.

Heated Water:

On the other hand, you could get a heated pool. Those are super comfortable, even during the winter. Watch out for that energy bill, though.

Learn How to Homestead

Would you like to teach your family some valuable life skills? Homesteading is the art of making your land productive. You can take this to different levels depending on how much space you've got. The that you have, the more you can do.

Chicken Coops:

Even small yards tend to have enough space for a small chicken coop. However, not all HOAs will let you have one. If you live somewhere that you can, then you'll have all the fresh eggs you could eat.

Garden Plots:

Growing some of your own herbs and vegetables is another great way to use your space. Nothing tastes better than something you've grown yourself. Check your climatic zones, and pick something that'll grow well where you live.

Horse Stables and Pig Pens:

You'll have to own a sizeable chunk of land for these. However, as long as you can manage it, these would probably be the most exciting. You could make your own sausage. Plus, you could learn how to break a horse. Then, you could ride them wherever you please. Imagine taking the whole family on a trip, riding your own horses.

Trampolines Are a Great Way to Exercise

Trampolines let you spice up even modestly-sized spaces. Maybe you don't have enough space for a full pool. However, there's still more than enough area for you to place a trampoline. Not to mention, these are a great way to exercise. That'll make it that much easier for you and the family to stay in shape.

How to Maximize Your Renovations for the Family

We could list ideas endlessly. However, at the end of the day, these renovations will be yours. So, we'd suggest talking to your family about them. They might have even better ideas. Regardless, the most important thing is that you and your family enjoy them. Part of the fun is figuring out what to do. So, start brainstorming. You can use one of our ideas. Or, they can serve as a mere starting point.
