5 Consumer Technologies for Health Monitoring

by Marc Feldstein HealthTech Expert

One of the most promising and impactful areas of technological development is taking place in the health industry. Health monitoring devices, developed by established players in the health industry, start-ups, telcos and mega companies like Apple, Google, Amazon and Samsung, are flooding the market with new technologies and applications at a torrent pace.

These new technologies are improving their capabilities continuously and can do anything from counting steps to monitoring your heart rate and blood pressure to tracking your movements and sleep, managing your medications, sending reports to your doctor and more.

Here are 5 health monitoring technologies that are becoming widely popular, you may want to consider for your own use.

Fitness Trackers

Now many smart phones and smart watches also double as fitness trackers. They can track your steps, sleep, heart rate, calories and overall activity. What makes them even smarter and more useful is what they can do with the data that's captured. They can let you know via texts or calls, when you've hit your fitness targets or when you've reached your physical limits. Many fitness tracking elements, like step counting, are free and embedded in most smart phones.

Wireless Blood Pressure Monitoring

For those with high blood pressure, wireless blood pressure monitors have revolutionized their care and safety. No matter where they are, whether it's on an airplane, in a car or at work, individuals can now take their blood pressure, without having to run back home or to the doctors office. Many are integrated with your smart phone, and can keep track of your blood pressure over time, helping you and your doctor uncover trends.

Medical Alert System

For older adults living alone, medical alert systems can be a life saving technology. In the event of a fall or medical emergency, they allow the user to get help by simply pressing a button around their neck or on their wrist, even when a phone is out of reach. Recent technology even allows for automatic fall detection and GPS location tracking so help can be sent to you even if you can't press the button, no matter where you are.

There are a lot of excellent medical alert devices for seniors available at very reasonable cost. Compare devices to find the one that best suits your level of need, technological competence and price range.

Portable Gluten and Peanut Detector

With people becoming more aware that their irritable bowel syndrome may be a result of a gluten allergy or celiac disease, there's been a dramatic increase in demand for gluten free foods. While it's easy to buy foods in the grocery store labeled gluten free, doing so in restaurants, cafeterias and while travelling may be harder to achieve and or trust. Similarly, for those with peanut allergies, which can be life threatening for some, testing ones food before eating it, can be critical.

That's where new gluten and peanut detectors can really provide a lot of help and are revolutionizing food safety for millions of people. One company, called Nima, is doing a great job of providing both detectors to consumers. That said, it should be noted, these devices are not yet regulated, so they should not be relied upon as fail safe solutions. But if you deem a food safe, you can then use one of these detectors as a back-up to your own conclusion.

A Growing Trend

We don't see the trend of consumer accessible healthcare stopping any time soon. We see newer technologies, more applications, more affordability and more all in the name of making it easier for individuals to stay healthier and look after their own health.
