4 Ways to Bust an Aggressive Sales Pitch When Buying a New Car

by Diane Capri Finance Blog
Planning to buy a new car? Here comes the sales pitch

There are a sizable number of us, ordinary, self-assured folk, who cave under the onslaught of aggressive sales talk. When buying a car, we would have made a decision to purchase a particular model, finished months of exhaustive research pertaining to this new car and balanced our budget in line with our requirement, however, a simple sales pitch from an overzealous sales representative will have us re-evaluate our plans, second guess our decisions and find faults with our own research.

STOP! Can’t you see? You are being led down the road of no return (figuratively, I mean as far as buying a car goes).

The best defence tactic in your arsenal to counteract an aggressive salesperson is to be the personification of Buddha himself. And, dutifully comply with the simple tips as listed below:

Get your Facts Straight:
Don’t spill all your guts in front of the sales monster. When buying a car, little communication could actually go a long way. Letting the salesperson be aware of your specific requirements, boundaries and contingencies will allow him/her to customise their offering to seamlessly fit your demands. Pay homage to the idea that you are arriving to buy a car with ready information of your own- let the salesman try to convince you otherwise.

Compare, Compare, Compare:
From the choice of available new cars, to prospective car loan options, you must have ready, non-speculative information about everything that will lead to the purchase and owning of the new car. One of the best ways to counteract an overenthusiastic sales rep is to engage in a mutual discussion that allows for free flowing conversation and exchange of opinions and ideas. You are buying a car, not working your way out of a hostage situation!!

Leave your Emotions at the Door:
People in sales absolutely hate it when their prospective quarry isn’t showing any emotions through the negotiations. Put on your poker face and don’t react like a six year old the second you see your ideal set of wheels. This doesn’t mean that you must wipe out all emotions like an AI Robot, but work towards avoiding situations that will leave you open to suggestive mental manipulation. Always remember, there are many available deals in the market, other dealerships where you can purchase the same new car, in essence- plenty of fish in the sea.

If the Salesperson Complains- Hit the Ignore Button:
How often have we seen this? You present your situation and the sales monster brushes it aside as if it were a bad habit. You have asked for customizations and freebies, and the sales guy talks of how little his dealership will end up making off this new car. You have raised some valid concern and the salesperson smirks (The dictionary reads, smirk: smile in an irritatingly smug, conceited, or silly way).

Remember, you are the boss in this equation. It’s your money that’s on the line. Thus, if the salesperson depends on his amateurish drama skills to pull off the deal, you can- a) walk off and approach a more mature dealership, b) throw a focussed tantrum of your own, or c) ignore this charade for what it is- a ploy to make the maximum profit off your potential business. Choose the last option, keep the focus and command the proceedings before you.

For many of us, buying a car is a major milestone event- one that comes after a suitable duration of planning, pondering and discussions over dinners and lunches. An overenthusiastic salesman could throw a massive spanner on your planning- if you only allow him to. Take charge, be comfortable and thoroughly enjoy the process as you buy a new car.
