4 Types of Anime Genre

by Anime Haven Anime Creation
We all know the typical, cookie cutter genres in literary works and movies. You have your magical, dragon-filled fantasies, rampaging cyborg science fiction, suspenseful detective mystery, lovey-dovey romantic and so forth. Now onto something more interesting – here are specific story genres that are only found in the imaginative world of anime.

Types of Anime Genre

#1 Jidai Geki
One thing animators love is their samurai’s. Jadai geki is a genre that is highly popular in Japan, literally translated as “period dramas”. Most jadai geki works take place in the Edo period dating back from 1603 to 1868. Some also extend to the late Heian period and the early Meiji era. Most jidai geki anime showcase the life of survival in those timeline with samurai, farmer and craftsman characters. One of the most famous jidai geki anime of all time is Rurouni Kenshin (also known as Samurai X).

#2 Ecchi
Unlike Hentai, which is the equivalent of anime porn (which the underaged should stay away from) — the ecchi category is for anime titles that have a hint of playful sexual content. These series usually features busty female characters that provide the occasional “fan service” — materials and incidents that does not add to the main plot, but rather are added only to please the audience. Ecchi anime does not show actual sexual intercourse and are soften with only a sexual overtone in the themes. Some examples include Love Hina and High School of the Dead.

#3 Mecha
The favorite of many shounen and seinen viewers — mecha anime (literally meaning robot anime) — are works that features giant robots in battle. Mecha series can explore a wide range of themes, from light-hearted comedy to serious drama and political struggles. Most have a fantastical and larger-than-life undertone, with large-scale battle scenes and action sequences. This genre also propelled the popularity of robot-figures hobbyists. Although there are many examples of successful mecha works, like the highly popular Code Geass and Neon Genesis Evangelion, the king of mecha anime is crowned to the creators of the Gundam series.

#4 Mahou Shoujo
Mahou shoujo, or the magical girl genre, is widely popular amongst the female audiences. Beginning with the Princess Knight manga in 1953, this category has grown in numbers since its revitalization from the highly successful series Sailor Moon. Like its title suggests, this is a subgenre of fantasy where the storyline relies heavily on having a lead protagonist that uses magic. Other examples include Cardcaptor Sakura and the darker title Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
