by Academy Glass Toronto’s Glass Repair & Replacement Service
If you have a glass door in your home and are looking for ways to cover it for privacy, then this blog-post is meant for you. Our experts are going over four important ways to cover a glass door, including frosting, window dressing installation options.

A glass door is a great addition to any home because of its great aesthetic appeal. It can also be a cost-effective way to add style and gain natural light without having to invest in reframing the walls to create new windows.  A glass door is transparent in nature and can put your privacy at stake. In this blog-post by Academy Glass and Mirror, a glass company in Toronto, we are going over four easy ways to customize a glass door to ensure privacy.

Frost the Glass

You can either select a frosted glass door or frost the glass on your own if you have already purchased and installed a door. To do the latter, follow these steps.

1. Clean the door with vinegar and water

Mix four parts water and one part vinegar in a spray bottle and shake it thoroughly. Apply the solution on the glass door and wipe it with a clean cloth in circular motions. Repeat the process with vertical and horizontal strokes until the door looks spotless.

2. Cover the outside edges of the door with a painter’s tape (optional)

This step is optional and is applicable only if you have a wooden framed glass door. Apply the painter’s tape along the outside edges of the glass to cover the door frame. Also cover any other area you wish to remain unpainted.

3. Spray the frosted glass spray paint

Spray the frosted glass spray paint on the door horizontally from right to left side and then from left to right. Keep the spray bottle steady while spraying on the door to ensure a neat look.

4. Let the spray dry for a while

This is an important step because it will allow the frosting to take place. Check the opacity of the frosting after one layer if you need more, then apply another layer. But make sure the first layer of coating has dried properly before you apply another layer or else your effort will be wasted.

Install Shutters

Shutters can be used as door coverings to prevent the entry of the outside light and to maintain privacy. This accessory is made of vertical stiles and horizontal rails with louvers fixed within the frame to control the shutters’ movement and position. They are sturdy in nature and can be a good investment for your home. If you’re planning to choose this option, then make sure you paint them with a similar colour to the walls to bring balance in the room.

Hang Curtains

Curtains or draperies are a good choice for covering a glass door. You should fix curtain rods on the wall above the door and mount drapes. There is a wide variety of curtain patterns available such as single colour, sheer, floral or abstract prints to choose from based on the interiors of your home. You shouldn’t compromise on their width and length because if they are too narrow and short then the door might not be covered properly.

Install Roman Shades

Roman shades are another great glass door covering option. They are made of fabric which is why they appear smooth when they are opened with a cord mechanism. When they are closed, they stack up above the frame fixed against the glass door. You can also choose different styles like looped or hobbled and classic shades based on your preferences.

These are some of the cost-effective ways to cover a glass door for privacy. You can frost the glass, install shades or shutters and hang curtains, the choice is yours. All of them are unique in their characteristics and will block the entry of outside light and ensure privacy in a room that has a glass door.
