Many travelers want to know of the best places to experience the Northern Lights. If you want to know more about the Northern Lights, it is a common name for Aurora Borealis, a natural light display in the sky primarily seen in high latitude regions. They are a result of cosmic rays, solar wind and magnetospheric plasma interacting with the upper atmosphere.

The Northern Lights are unpredictable - you need a dark, clear night to see one. They generally are visible from September to March between 6 pm and 6 am. The weather in the Arctic circle is also unpredictable, meaning that if you expect to see the Northern Lights at a certain time, it may not happen because the weather may change in the blink of an eye.

Here are 4 amazing places to enjoy a view of one of Planet Earth’s most amazing phenomenons:

1.    Asbiko
A polar desert located right in the centre of the auroral zone, Asbiko is a Polar desert in Europe where the Northern Lights appear on an average of 159 out of 212 nights. This region is protected by mountains surroundings and also receives the least precipitation in Sweden, meaning that most of its nights are clear and offer a stellar view of the Aurorae. Prepare yourself for some difficult treks to reach sweet spots to see the Northern Lights here.

2.    Pello
This destination, located in one of the most northern parts of Finland, offers amazing viewing points to witness the Northern Lights. As said before, the weather can play spoilsport any time, but don’t let that dishearten you. Ensure that you go as north as possible, and hope for the best.

3.    Alta
Located in the coastal region of Norway, Alta surprisingly suffers the least of the coastal effects in the summer.  This location is also close to the airport and has plenty of activities for you to do. So whether you are unfortunate to not have spotted the Northern Lights when you were there, or have spotted the delightful Northern Lights, you will have a good vacation in this city Norwegian city.

4.    Inari
According to reports, the town of Inari is relatively more populated and a poor spot to try and spot the Northern Lights. However, travel a few kilometers north of the town and you will come across bright and clear skies, and gorgeous pine forests.

When traveling to Europe, especially to places as cut off as the ones listed above, the internet may not be reliable. You may not be able to make international calls to stay connected with family and friends through calling apps. A useful alternative is a calling card, which does not need the internet to let you make international calls. Plus, if your family and friends back home have calling cards too, they have access to plans which let them make cheap calls to Europe and stay connected with you. So not only can you make international calls for really low rates, but your family and friends can also make cheap calls to Europe and stay in touch with you wherever you are.

You have to put in effort to spot the Northern Lights. As mentioned above, weather and pollution can be detrimental to your attempts. So make sure that you interact with locals and find out the best way to spot the Aurorae. Trust us, once you see even one, it is an experience that you will cherish for the rest of your life.
