3 Things I Wish I Could Have Done at Launch

by Mark Aselstine Ecommerce Business Owner, But Not Only
Ok, so let's get the basics out of the way at the beginning, I've owned and operated a wine of the month club for about a decade now.  When we started, we knew little about ecommerce or the struggles that were going to come our way.  To that end and to help other small business owners and founders, here's 3 things that I wish I could have done at launch:

1) Conversion Rate Optimization:When you launch a website, or an online store you're going to hear incessantly about how to drive traffic.  Stuff like SEO, social media and PPC advertising is going to be suggested again and again.  But those only bring people to your website.  Think about it this way, what if your conversion rate was 0 (don't laugh, at launch ours was pretty close to that). You could have millions of people on the site and not sell anything.  So yeah, conversion rates are more important than people realize.

2) Writing: So, I'm not a writer by trade.  But, I write an awful lot for work.  Be it on my company blog, guest posts like this one, or even newsletters for my customers.  There's an awful lot of writing.  An obscene amount of writing in fact at times.  I wish I would have accepted this fact earlier on and started to figure out how to take advantage of the fact that while I might not be the best writer in the world, or even a trained writer, but I can write fairly effectively, but fast.

3) Time Management:  Normally when you work for someone else, there's a suite of people handling stuff for you.  Sure, it's frustrating when they don't complete jobs on time, but really, you have some built in support.  As a small business owner, you constantly have to figure out if its better to focus on the short term, or the long term of your business.
