3 Reasons Why Students Should Wear School Uniforms

by Christiana Jones Digital Specialist - Market Researcher
School uniforms tend to be a big deal in Australia, particularly among non-secular private schools. While public schools are more lenient with their school uniform policies, private schools are often a stickler for rules. They expect students to abide by these rules and come to class wearing the proper school uniform.

Many private academic institutions are low-key competitive when it comes to uniform design and how their school uniforms appear to the public. This is because school uniforms can be a status symbol or a form of identity for both the school and the students wearing them.

What School Uniforms Teach Us

If people recognise your school uniform, they may associate you with certain values. For instance, a Harvard uniform could mean that the student wearing it is a diligent one. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for him or her to get into Harvard - an Ivy League university in the United States.

This goes without saying that there is more to school uniforms than meets the eye. In fact, uniforms contribute to children's development. Here are just a few reasons why children must wear one during their growing up years:

1. Most school uniforms are designed to look formal, neat and visually appealing. Constantly wearing their uniform encourages children to dress smartly and carry themselves confidently as they grow older.

2. Students come from different backgrounds. Some may be born rich, others raised by financially struggling parents. Such social disparities become more apparent in the absence of uniforms. But if all kids wear the same attire throughout the school year, it's unlikely for them to pay attention to social status. School uniforms minimise these disparities and let children focus on academics.

3. School uniforms foster a sense of belongingness, informing people that you are a part of this institution. In fact, should anything happen to a student, their school uniform can be their saving grace. It would have been impossible for passers-by to inform your school of your whereabouts.

Final Words

Schools do have the leeway to waive school uniforms. But whether or not students should wear uniforms is the discretion of the school's stakeholders. The points raised above are worth considering, however, since growing children tend to be bothered by even the slightest innuendoes. School uniforms generally provide a more comfortable situation for students and academic institutions.
