What are the things one looks for in a website developer? Is there a checklist which you can compare your web developer too?

Finding a perfect web developer is not an easy task. The simple reason being there isn’t one. The best web developers are not magicians. No one can conjure up a great website. Technologies change. Trends change. More importantly does your website reflect who you are?

Understanding you.

The first quality your web development service provider should have is listening. He should try to understand what you stand for, your business ethics and your products and services. The graphics and content should all work towards giving visitors the feeling that you desire to project.

Communicating with your customers.

Your developer should be a great communicator. Once he has understood you and you products and services, he should be able to project your ideas on the net in such a manner that it attracts customers. A great looking design doesn’t count if the customer doesn’t respond to it. The ultimate aim of any site is a conversion of visitors to customers. A good website design engages and urges customers to act rather than just window shop. If the visitor leaves the site confused and unhappy then the beauty of the site is useless.

Check portfolio

Check out the portfolio of your developer or developers, in case you have shortlisted more than one. Find out the kind of work a developer has done before. Does his style conform to your ideas? Does he use a single template for everything? Check out the functionality of his designs. Does he leave loose ends? Does he have links that lead to nowhere or his sites have dead-end pages? At the same time do not be afraid to call up some of the site owners to take a feedback from them. It is quite possible that someone may claim to have worked on a website though he was never a part of it. It is also possible that a person has worked on only a part of a website, but claims to have done it completely. You could also find out the developer’s behavior while on the job. Everybody is cordial at the start, but they may become elusive once the project starts.

Custom web designing is not easy and most website designers use templates for which they have ready codes. You must understand the developers problems and give them that leeway at the same time be gently firm about the end result that you want. They may want to drown you in a lot of jargon, but as long as you know what you want then the going is much simpler.

 Good luck with your website.
