Image If you have ever been to a bar, you have probably been mesmerized by the techniques of the barmen who mix, blend, shake and mud the drinks for you in a fun and artistic way. However, each cocktail has its own method, making a drink with wrong method could result in disaster. Yet, it is extremely simple to avoid.

The main tip to remember is that any cocktail that contains fruits or eggs must be blended. Any other drink can be shaken or stirred. The effect for each type is different; a cocktail that has been shaken produces a colder and cloudier drink than the one that has been stirred. There are certain drinks that can only be made by one method. If the method is changed, it may cause a different taste or blend. For instance, we all remember James Bond saying he preferred his Martini “shaken, not stirred”, but most bartenders would be angry if you ask them to do so since the flavor is considered to be worsened and the spirit bruised. Make sure you do as described in the recipe, it’s highly unlikely that you will be the first one to see if the other methods are more efficient.

1.    Blending

Blending gives the results that mere shaking cannot; specifically, the ingredients you need might need to become mixed properly. Recipes with eggs or fruits will require blending with a liquidizer or a jug. But remember, you should not blend for long and the cocktail should not be slushed. So use as little time as possible and also, break the ice cubes before you put them into blender. Do not use full cubes and you can also use cracked ice.

2.    Mixing

When you use clear ingredients, you simply need to put them in a glass beaker or a jug with the pouring lip, with the capacity of around 2 pints. Four cubes of ice should be added into the beaker before you put the ingredients in. Use long handled spoon until the contents are chilled; that is when you see condensation on the jug outside. If there’s anything sparkling among the ingredients, stir very gently to make the presence of the fizziness.

3.    Muddling

If you are making a Mint Julep or an Old Fashioned, you will need to use muddling. This is a method which uses a “muddler” mixing or stirring spoon with a rounded knob. Muddler is used for crushing the mint leaves in conjunction with the sugar for a Mint Julep. It is also used for crushing Angostura Bitters in conjunction with the sugar for an Old Fashioned. Once these are added to other ingredients, the spoon side of the muddler is used for stirring the drink.

All the methods we described above are used for some particular drinks. By following the recipe step by step with the techniques provided above, you can create a cocktail with the best flavor and blend you can get.
