3 Effective Tips For Better And Healthier Tooth Brushing

by Dylan Wells Brilliant Oral Care

DISCLOSURE: Noelle Copeland RDH is the oral care specialist and dental consultant to the Brilliant and Baby Buddy oral care lines through Compac Industries. See terms below Tip #1 Technique How you brush your teeth matters, maybe even more so than how much. It’s useless to brush 3-4 times a day, the wrong way, and yet, so many people fall into this trap. The Bass Method for toothbrushing is by far the most effective and adaptable method prescribed. If you have gum recession or exposed root surfaces, orthodontic appliances or are recovering from oral surgery, talk to your dental professional about other speciality methods that will best suit your specific oral care needs. Bass Method

  • Most widely used and recommended for all ages
  • Addresses plaque found just below the gumline
  • Toothbrush head is tilted to a 45-degree angle to reach the sulculus (space just underneath the gum line), while using back and forth or circular motions to remove plaque
  • Soft toothbrush with rounded bristle tips required, to prevent tissue trauma

Modified Bass Method

  • Most frequently recommended
  • The modification for this method is that it ends with a sweeping stroke from the gumline, sweeping down to the tooths tip or chewing surface
  • Toothbrush head is tilted to a 45-degree angle to reach the sulculus (space just underneath the gum line), while using shortened back and forth or circular motions to remove plaque, ending with a sweep from the gumline to the tooth's tip.

Tip #2 Timing

Brushing your teeth with the proper technique is probably the most important detail in an effective homecare routine, but the timing of your brushing routine is the second most important!

  • Brush a minimum of twice a day, preferably in the morning before eating and in the evening before going to sleep for the evening. Brushing more may be indicated by your dental professional for certain circumstances.
  • It's imperative that you brush for at least 2 minutes, 30 seconds in each of the 4 quadrants of your mouth
  • Don't brush after a particularly acidic meal, drink or snack, wait 30 minutes. Acid removes the mineral pellicle that protects tooth enamel and it takes 30 minutes to rebuild most of it. Brushing too soon can contribute to progressive enamel wear.
  • Brushing after every meal is not typically recommended, as it can also contribute to progressive enamel wear. However, using a Xylitol enhanced gum, mint or rinse is, especially after meals or snacks, as this helps to protect teeth and prevent cavities.

Tip #3 Therapeutics

Home oral care therapeutics refers to anything used to treat disease, support mechanics or maintain health. Some therapeutics include the following.

  • OTC mouth rinse
  • Prescriptions mouth rinse
  • Xylitol enhanced products
  • Fluoride enhanced products
  • Floss, and floss enhanced with fluoride or xylitol
  • Saliva stimulating tablets, gels, rinses
  • Water irrigators
  • Interproximal stimulators
  • Toothpaste/Tooth gel If you were looking for better and healthier ways to establish an effective homecare routine, you found the right place.
