A children’s playground is the perfect place for the younger generation to educate themselves through the medium of play. As well as promoting physical development, many important life lessons are learned in the playground.

While a child is learning to climb a ladder, they may also be learning how to take turns and as they are building castles in a sand pit, they may also be learning how to share with other children. So, as you can see, the benefits of a playground are evident but how do you ensure that your playground maximises those benefits?

Here, we share some basic design guidelines that will ensure that your playground is the best it can be!

1. Diverse play spaces

A good playground should have many diverse play spaces that allow for different types of play experiences. For example, there should be areas for structured play such as a see-saw and swings, areas for creative play such as a playhouse and a place for play with natural elements such as a sandpit or water feature. In addition, it is important to have a shared open space so that children can mix and interact with other children in order to develop their social and interpersonal skills.

2. Play equipment

Children’s playground equipment should be eye-catching which is why you’ll often see brightly coloured playground equipment. As well as being attractive, it should be safely constructed and installed so as to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all users. Popular play equipment is constructed in many different materials including wood, metal and sturdy plastic. Architectural playground equipment is very popular in many parks as it captures a child’s imagination as well as adding an element of unique design and style that further captures the child’s mind.

3. Landscaping

A popular playground does not just depend on the play spaces and play equipment contained within it. It also depends on the landscaping of the entire playground. For this reason, it is important that you introduce plenty of green spaces within the boundaries of your playground. If this isn’t possible, the addition of a rock garden or a garden feature will work just as well. Children need to be able to appreciate the beauty of the natural world around them and the playground is the perfect place for them to understand this.

With these design tips, you can ensure that the children who use your playground, whether it is in a commercial setting, in a church, hospital or school, will get the most out of each and every visit.
