2019 Cake Trends: The Latest Cake Trends You Really Need To Know About

by Rahul Rawat Blogger
Whether you’re a fan of Indian parties or hate them, there's no denying that the main edible attraction at every occasion is the cake. In the past few years, cakes have evolved from being mere white icing desserts to colourful, over-the-top confections from professional pastry chefs or bakers.

Today, this delicious contrivance is no longer about only the taste. It’s also about the decoration, presentation and more importantly, the celebration. Here are eight favourite cake trends for 2019. These trends show us how this celebratory sweet has changed with the times. From updates on classic styles to over-the-top modern cakes, this post has something for everyone.

Adding geometric shapes to your cake for a fun twist

Geometric themed cakes were one of the hottest trends of 2018. Everywhere you look - from stationery to cakes, ceremony backdrops to table settings - geometric elements are spreading like wildfire. And it’ll continue to be so this year, albeit subtly. Detailing your round cake with little squares, hexagons & triangles in bright, bold colours adds a fun modern twist to a celebration.

Say goodbye to white and hello to black cakes for weddings

When most people think about wedding cakes, they probably conjure up an image of a delicate, multi-tier, white-coloured confection. But now there's a new trend that's the total opposite: black wedding cakes. Black is bold, and it has come into the matrimony world in many different forms lately. More and more to-be-weds are choosing dark desserts to make a statement. Sure, they're dark and tend to be a little dramatic, but they can add a bit of edge to the occasion while still maintaining a classic shape or design.

Vibrant cake designs rule Indian baby showers...

With matki (pot), figurines, and other mythology-inspired details, Indian baby shower cakes are the latest fad that has guests scrambling to score a slice. Instead of the classic folklore, to-be-moms are opting for subtly stylish cakes with a bright and colourful aesthetic. Whether you're a stickler for traditions or love the cuteness vibe, a vividly colourful cake with a mom figurine is an excellent choice for baby showers. It allows you to be unique while still fitting the 'classic' mould. With so many different styles to personalize these cakes, one can work with the baker to achieve a custom look that reflects the mom-to-be's style.

... While superhero cakes rule kids birthday parties

Like all facets of kids’ parties, cakes are hit by regular trends. Whether they’ve been inspired by computer games, TV shows, movies or other kids’ birthdays, these trends are strongly felt by parents trying to put parties together. And the latest fad is all about the recent Marvel, DC and Disney films. Gone are the days when kids were easily appeased by plain, regular round cakes. Be it whatever the occasion, all the kids (and a few adults) want today is a superhero cake! Of course, this longing comes from their everlasting love of superheroes as they dream of turning into their favourite character one day, or at least flaunt some of the superpowers. Spiderman, Hulk, Elsa and Wonder Woman are some of the most popular choices.

Foliage makes a comeback with oversized floral

Officially named the colour shade of 2018, greenery is set to come to the fore in this year’s cake decor. Building on the existing woodland and nature-inspired wedding cake trend, foliage and greenery no longer have a tiny part but are a major theme in birthday cakes for girls. Foliage takes on more than just equal billing with oversized flowers this year. Speaking of, 2019 is all about large blooms cascading down the side of wedding cakes.  Delicate, pretty and whimsical, oversized flowers are a winning choice when it comes to adding those finishing touches to an otherwise simple cake.

Ombre pink replaces the traditional red for Valentine’s Day cakes

Come February and Valentine’s Day becomes the only topic in people’s minds. The traditional Valentine’s Day cake trend of heart-shaped decorations or strawberries and buttercream has cooled off and taken a new avatar. Instead of the old dark red, little pink-hued heart motifs are the new go-to option for modern-day lovebirds. This particular look is created by adding natural food colouring to the many layers of your cake, thus creating a dramatic ombre effect.

There’s a great demand for macaroon cakes

The whole country watched with star-struck eyes as Akash Ambani and Shloka Mehta tied the knot last year. Among other things, their wedding was a great opportunity for India to be introduced to Ladurée (a French luxury bakery), that had everyone agog with its breath-taking Macaroon pyramid. Since December, this small biscuit made from ground almonds, coconut, and other nuts with sugar and sometimes flavourings, has the confectionery world in a tizzy. The web is full of a wide variety of cake recipes featuring this delicious delicacy. Even Priyanka Chopra sent back boxes of this dessert to her film's team back home, while she was shooting for The Sky is Pink. What's more, co-star Farhan Akhtar shared Instagram Stories featuring this treat. Needless to say, if you’re on the hunt for something that makes a grand statement at a larger-than-life celebration, look no further than macaroon cakes.

Gravity-defying cakes are the new challenge

This last trend is for those artists who wish to make a mark with their baking skills. The world is full of talented pastry chefs looking for new ways to improve or showcase their skills. The web features some of the most awe-inspiring works of cake art. Whether you have been watching via social media or taking part in some of these shows yourself, you have probably noticed the incredible line-up of cakes in various competitions. 3D cakes, optical illusion & gravity-defying cakes are a few designs that seem to wow judges and spectators alike; these designs are a great way for bakers to push their creative boundaries, regardless of whether they’re amateurs or professionals.

So, that’s it! These are eight favourite cake trends of 2019 that you should watch out for. Do you agree with this list or not? Let us know in the comments. Also, take a look at this page if you’re looking for the latest cake designs.
