20 Places to Notify of an Adress Change

by Kevin Vitali Kevin Vitali- Massachusetts REALTOR

Introduction

If you are making an address change, the first thing to do is to be sure that your mail can reach you. So start by filling in the USPS change of address form online or at the post office if you are not online at home. The fee of $1.05 is paid on a credit card, and is not about the money but is to validate that you are a real person making the transaction. After that is done you are ready to change everything else, and other changes that need to be made are quite a few!

1.USPS at the Post Office

If you make the address changes at the post office you will receive an email to validate your payment in 3-5 days. You should do this two weeks before you move so that your mail can be successfully redirected.

2.Department of Motor Vehicles

Notify the department issuing your driver's license and registering the motor vehicle to your new address. This is important if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident it enables authorities to find your next of kin.

3.Social Security

If you are receiving any type of benefit you will need to fill out a change of address form so social security can reach you.

4.Taxation Department

Both Federal and State tax departments should be notified of your change of address. The IRS has an online form that is simple to fill in with all your new details.

5.Utility Bills

Gas and electricity need to be changed, and if you are moving nearby they should be transferable. Give them a couple of weeks' notice of your moving date, so everything can proceed smoothly.

6.Home Insurance

Both home contents and house insurance need to be notified. You may have renter's insurance and the new landlord may want to see a copy of your insurance papers before you make the move.

7.Bank and Credit Cards

You will need to call the bank and let your credit card provider know as well. If you have a new home loan your bank will have your new address and will want to know that all paperwork is complete prior to settlement day.

8.Your Employer

You need to notify your employer of your new address. If you work from home you still need to tell them so that they can send your payslips and other company information as required.

9.Your Kids School

If you have bought a new home nearby, this is very exciting, so don't forget to let the school know. Some schools have very specific catchment areas, and a change of address can mean a change of school. You will need to make sure that the kids don't need to change schools when you move.

10.Student Loans

If you are moving from home to your first flat, you will need to notify your student loan provider that you have moved.

11.Clubs and Organizations

Tennis club, golf club, sailing club. Any social club or organization that you belong to should be notified of your move.

12.Phone Cable and Internet

If you are working from home, all this should be set in place before you move. Give them at least two weeks' notice, and don't forget your cell phone provider. You want to be sure that your new address actually has cable connected, having recently struck that problem it can be very time-consuming.

13.Other Utilities

Definitely water, and in some places you also have to notify your garbage contractor for rubbish and recycling collection.

14.Your Doctor

Notify your doctor or medical practice and your dentist of the move, they will want to know where to send the bills.

15Vetinary Practice

Change registration for cats and dogs, as their ID tags should reflect their new address, in case they get lost.

16.Tollway Tag

The E tag for your motor vehicle that allows you to drive on the expressway, will also want to know where to send the bill.

If you are moving across the country, remove the tag before you ship the car over. If you don't the tag will register on every tollway across the country and this can be costly.

17.The Cleaning Company

Notify the company to come and clean your old house as soon as you have moved, as you won't have time to do it yourself before the new family moves in.

18.Electoral Role

If you vote, it is important to change your address with the electoral roll, and when you move you may be in a different electorate with new people to vote for!

19.Family and Friends

Send an SMS or email to family and friends advising them of your new address and date of move, they may want to drop by with food!

20.Baby Sitters

Let the sitter know where you have moved to so that they can plan their drive over to fit in with your next booking.

USPS Change of Address

When you move to a new home your USPS change of address is just the start of the process, as there is so very much to do.

Make sure that your new home has a clearly labeled mailbox in front so that the postman is sure to find you. If you are in a different neighborhood, you may need to install a new post box with a lock, especially if you are out at work all day, in some places mail theft is common.

Mail Forwarding

If you have moved out of your home and are planning a trip for a few months before you buy another house, you can arrange to have your mail forwarded to a post box. Get a friend to pick it up for you, as most bills can be paid remotely.

Conclusion

Address change involves so much more than just moving to a new house, especially if you have kids and animals. It is a good idea to make a list to prompt you of what you need to change. Always do your USPS change of address first.
