The landscape has changed so fast that many have not even noticed. Marketing on line is a social thing, its about engaging and dialogue, yet many big business still try the old fashioned way.
Forget about the little guy pushing affiliate products, many of those are still selling ebooks on internet marketing 101, or how to succeed on a social site. Many are way past that, at least that's where the business minded are. Or did these little businesses miss the whole Web 2.0 episode?

David has perfectly described Word Of Mouth marketing. Now the WOM style of marketing has moved online, and by doing that it has widened the possible number of people that your customers can share your business with.
It also means that they can also spread the word about less than positive experiences they might have.
So once again, quality of interactions and business dealings should be considered above blasting out advertising just to be seen, and possibly make a sale.

You need to engage with your customers you need that trust bond,
The Internet is great for directing traffic,but if your doing a sevice or selling something even if it is on ebay in order to get repeat business is to get into a dialogue with your customers as there is nothing better than a customer who remembers you by name because you took that little extra time .That on customer could bring you 5 or 10 new customers.Thats my believe

Marketing online is about networking with like minded people in your target market. The traditional way well I guess it still works for some but not me lol. I'm to addicted to the internet.
