Making fabric flowers for
leather bags can be as simple as cutting out petal
and leaf shapes and gluing them onto a vinyl purse, or as complex as
multi-layered creations of fabric, feathers and beads that are sewn
together. Let your imagination be your guide when you embellish your
accessories.
Cut the fabric into 5-inch squares. One
square will make one flower. Larger squares will make bigger flowers.
Small squares will be difficult to work with.
Fold the fabric three times, like a fan or an accordion,
creating pleats. Iron the pleats and then use straight pins to hold the
pleats in place.Sew the pleats in place with a narrow seam along each side.
Turn the pleated fabric so that the pleats are facing the
side and then pleat them again, from the bottom to the top. Iron, pin
and stitch the pleats in place the same way you did before.
Hold the pleated fabric square in one hand and use the
forefinger on your other hand to push up from the bottom center of the
fabric, creating a dome shape.
Pull the corners toward the bottom center.Pinch the top center of the dome and twist it in one
direction and then press it down. Lay it flat and iron the flower shape
into place. Make one small stitch through the center of the flower to
help it keep its shape.
