My main weakness
The Science Behind Concentration
In the above account, Mike?s obviously stuck in a routine that many of us may have found ourselves in, yet in the moment we feel it?s almost an impossible routine to get out of. Many fall into this pattern because constantly shifting attention and multitasking eases the pain of doing something you hate in the first place. We mitigate essays and projects with blasts of dopamine delivered through tweets, music and gossip. What science tells us, though, is that not only does multitasking make our work 50% less valuable; it takes 50% longer to finish. Plus, it?s physiologically impossible for the brain to multitask.
When we constantly multitask to get things done, we?re not multitasking, we?re rapidly shifting our attention. And this rapid shifting kills the mind, it waters its effectiveness down significantly. When we follow Mike?s pattern above, the mind shifts through three phases:
Phase 1: Blood Rush Alert
When Mike decides to start writing his History essay, blood rushes to his anterior prefrontal cortex. Within this part of the brain, sits a neurological switchboard. The switchboard alerts the brain that it?s about to shift concentration.

Laurence,
David Allen, the creator of the GTD method, i.e. Getting Things Done, says pen and paper are still the best ways to deal with out next actions, i.e. our todo list. It keeps things simple. :)
I like what he says, I like what you say. I try to follow the leaders who make sense. :)

I often do that, do a few things at the same time, but that there is actually adding a new job for me.
and now I try to focus on one thing only, until the job was finished properly.

Focus is the only way to succeed, no matter what you're doing. I agree with the points people have raised here.
I personally use a notepad and pen (yes, the old fashioned way) and make a list of the things to do the next day.
I prioritise them so if I don't get everything done, at least the most important things will be finished.
When I cross something off, it feels like I have accomplished something.

Very interesting article, and I think we can learn a lot from it, this I think is the best part, multitasking make our work 50% less valuable; it takes 50% longer to finish.

Great article Philippe, as a teacher, I use that word quite a bit with my students. I'm not too good at multi-tasking, now I see that's not so bad after all.
My favorite line in your article says... "the key to proper concentration is creating your own purpose-driven habits that enable you to step into flow.

Yes, but there are diffrences in structure to. In case of braindamage it is for the woman brain easier to switch funtions from left to right brain half then for main. Therefore more women recover better from braindamage because of this than man. I know a bit about it since my youngest got braindamage because of a flue virus. He never recovered but thank God he is very happy.

Multitasking was an 80's and 90's cliche thing. People who were considered good at multitasking were sought after by employers who figured they would get more than their monies worth. Many people would brag on their ability to multitask so that employers would find them attractive to hire...............needless to say, it's an ineffective method of working to produce results.......
Focus on individual tasks until complete, do the ones you least likely enjoy doing first to get them out of th

However lately I have gotten a little bit better with working on

Paula, funny, I was writing my comment after reading the first 2, then submitted and saw there was a notification. I was thinking, the author of the book mentioned in the article is a man. You and I had a telepathic moment :)

@Michael, sorry, I don't feel guilty LOL
@Nev, to be a multitasking guru, one has to be a woman ! :) No offense meant to the gals, it's John Gray who says it in his Men are from Mars... book LOL
I have to accept that I will do better quality if I listen to the author. My new coach wants me to learn the same thing too, i.e. work on a task until it is finished, then move on to the next

I have read somewhere woman are better in multi tasking. I think partly of the structure of the brain. And I think also because of training, since mothers and housewifes do multi tasking all their life.

When I first loaded this page my browser froze before the content came up. I thought, Oh No! Phil has no weaknesses.
Thankfully I managed to get the page to load. I always thought you were the multitasking guru! I agree, it is just too easy to be distracted from the many things we should be doing.
And you've introduced us to another great resource.
