Swom is all about social networking, so one of its main purposes is to help you connect with others. Not only that, but you earn points for each connection made and Gold members even get paid for doing so!

So how do you connect with other Swom members?

Firstly, when you log in to the dashboard, you may see a message in the Requests box (top right) saying ??..connection requests?. This is your notification that someone has requested connection with you. If you click on the link, you will go to a page showing you the name(s) of the member(s) who want to connect with you and an option to either accept or decline. Unless you have a particular reason to decline, please click accept here as it will benefit both you and the other member. You can?t interact directly with them, i.e. you can?t start a conversation with them, nor they with you until you?re connected and, in any case, it will gain both of you a point and another business contact. I?m always surprised at the number of members who don?t accept connection requests, since I can?t really see the point of not doing so on a social networking site.

If you want to find out if you have any requests waiting to be accepted, you can also go to http://swom.com/people/1/requests to access them directly.

You can also request connections yourself. To do this, click on a member?s name or picture to go to their profile page. Scroll down to where it says News Feed. If you are not yet connected with them, you will see a yellow box with the words ?Connect with?..?. Click on those words and wait until you see the message ?Connection request sent!? at the top of the page. Now you just have to wait for them to accept and you have another contact.

If you are already connected to the member, you will see your picture under News Feed and a box saying ?Say something to?.?

Occasionally you may get the message ?Invalid connection, a request already exists or declined by other party?. There are several possible reasons for this.

• You have already sent them a connection request.
• They have sent you a connection request and are waiting for you to accept it.
• They have declined your invitation to connect.

If you are getting this message, this is what you should do.

First, refresh the page you were connecting to them from. The reason for this is that, if you have two tabs open for the same person at the same time, the first one will go through and the second one will send back the invalid connection message since the request already exists. If you double-click the connect link, the same thing will happen. If you refresh the page which is giving you the invalid connection message, the connect link should disappear and be replaced by a connection pending message.

If the connect link is still there after refreshing, it means that the person has already requested a connection with you and is waiting for you to accept. If this is the case, when you go to the dashboard you should see the connection request.
