How to change a tap washer
So you have a dripping tap? Chances are you need to replace your tap washer or possibly the 'seat'. Washers are often made of rubber or plastic and work by blocking the flow of water when you tighten the tap.
What will you need for your repairs?
All you should need is a spanner and your new washer. If you don't know what type of washer you need you might need to follow steps 1 - 3 to remove the old washer. Once you have the old washer you can take it with you to your local hardware store to ensure you buy the correct size replacement washer.
Changing Your Tap Washer
1. Make sure you turn off your water mains. There may be an isolating valve under your sink or outside where your water meter is. Turning the valve off will ensure that you don't waste water or flood your house!
2. Turn your tap in the 'on' direction and continue turning until you've reached the end of the thread. At this point keep twisting an you will unscrew the tap knob.
3. Once the tap knob comes away, turn it upside down and you will see the washer (it looks like a little rubber disc). Simply remove and replace with the new washer.
4. Then all you need to do is put things back in the reverse order - screw on the tap knob and continue turning until tap is back in the 'off' position. Turn your mains back on and "hey presto" you should have a tap that no longer leaks!
