Your roof may be in need of repairing or cleaning. If that's the case, it's best to hire a professional to come over and do whatever repairs are needed. As experts familiar with roofing, they are more unlikely to make an error or further damage the roof. Still, there are plenty of things that anyone can do if they want to do tile roof repair themselves.

Firstly, if you want to repair your own roof, you need to be aware of the safety concerns involved. One should always refrain from walking across a roof undergoing repair. Walking on it can damage the structure, and of course you'll have a higher risk of falling. To move from one area of the roof to the a different area, it's better to make your way back to the ladder, descend it, move the ladder, and head up to the area you want to relocate to. It probably seems like an unnecessary hassle, but it is certainly the safest way to move around.

Also when you move the ladder and are preparing to climb up, don't forget to secure the ladder to the house. Otherwise it may slide or move while you're on it. Be sure to wear non-slip shoes and refrain from attempting roof repairs if there is a likelihood of rain, snow or other precipitation. Additionally, it's best if you can have a partner out there with you so you'll be able to get help.

Many problems are caused by broken or damaged tiles, or cracks in the roof. If you need to repair roof shingles, you'll require some special materials. These include roofing cement, a pry bar, and aluminum flashing.

Cut the flashing so that its width is an inch less and the length four inches more than the damaged piece of shingle. Using the pry bar, loosen the damaged shingle strip and adjacent strips on each side. Add roofing cement under the shingle where the flashing will go, and slide the flashing under the shingle. Add cement above it and apply pressure to the shingle to make sure the flashing is secure.

Another problem may be cracks in the roof which result from accumulated water. You can fix this by first absorbing the water with towels and other materials that soak up liquid. After that, use a knife to remove debris from the hole, being careful you don't damage other parts of the roof. Once you've extracted the debris, you can then drain out the remaining water and dry that area of the roof. Next apply some roof cement, seal it, and you're done.

By acquiring the equipment and materials needed for repairs and following some of the above suggestions, you should be able to safely fix the majority of minor roof damages.

Keep in mind that any extensive damage to your roof should not be fixed by you. It's advisable to hire professionals in such cases, since an improper repair will put people in the house in danger. You'll save costs overall if you pay for a professional up front, because you'll be less likely to have to pay for another repair and treatments of injuries.
