Clothing is an every day part of our lives, so much so that we rarely give it a second thought. Our early ancestors began clothing themselves in animal furs as protection from the elements. Man later learnt how to cure animal skins and then progressed to weaving fibres together to create cloth. This was the origin of clothes as we know them today.

The chief function of clothes are to protect us from the elements, but they have evolved over the years to keep us comfortable as we engage in various activities. We wear different outfits for our work environments or when we play tennis, go jogging, surfing or even for cooking. Clothing is also standardized as uniforms to denote status in the military and the clergy, amongst others.

Clothing is also most distinctive for defining you individual genders. As a gender we are defined by our clothing from early infancy, when as little girls we are dressed in pink or in blue for little boys. Boys are never dressed in skirts of dresses and it is only little girls who wear lace or frills. From an early age our style of dress defines us.

Fashion through the ages has had a guiding hand in how we dress and which items of clothing we wear. In earlier centuries it was commonplace for men to wear stockings, heels, wigs and to powder their faces. Cravats, waist coats, top hats, fur muffs and spats were all fashionable items worn to define the age and to individualize the person wearing them.

Underwear is so named because it is the layer worn closest to the skin. Generally made from soft, comfortable materials like cotton, lace or even silk, styling varies greatly. Every color in the color spectrum is available and styles vary from extremely simple to very fussy, with plenty of lace detailing, buttons, zips and tassels.

Womens bras are available in a marvellous selection of materials and styles, with enhancing features to make the most of your cleavage. Simple cotton bras are traditional for young girls who are just starting to wear bras for the first time, but older women usually select under wire bras. Corsets and bustiers are also very popular.

Defining your individual style with your outer wear can be extremely fun. Mixing and matching materials and colors is diversified by a broad range of styles. Trousers can range from faded blue jeans to dress pants, shorts, board shorts or tights. Shirts can have collars, round necks, square necks, v-necks, buttons, zips, lacing and other detailing.

Shoes are also a very important part of individual styling. A different impression is created by adding a pair of pink high heels to an outfit than what a pair of square-toed cowboy boots might create. The great thing about clothes is that most outfits are interchangeable and you can use the same basic items but by adding accessories like scarves, hats or coats, can make each outfit original. Color and basic materials also play an important role, completely altering the appearance of the same basic style.
