Career advice: You know what to do; you just need to work hard, very hard.

Essential business philosophy: Continually set goals, outline what you need to do and make sure it gets done.

Best way to keep a competitive edge: Network with those who have more knowledge and experience than you.

Yardstick of success: Did I give 100% today?

How you grew your company: Organically, with all positions promoted from within.

Biggest recent accomplishments: We went from broker to banker and streamlined the company with technology that allows us to handle hundreds of loans per month. Also, we survived the meltdown and are in excellent shape to dominate our market going forward.

Goal yet to be achieved: Loan volume of $2 billion originated in a single year.

Judgment Calls

Best business decision: The fact that we were profitable through the mortgage meltdown makes me believe in the decisions that were made along the way.

Toughest business decision: I actually enjoy the tough decisions. That?s what keeps me in the game.

Mentor: I can?t say that I?ve had one. However, I?ve enjoyed watching Doug Lebda grow LendingTree and keep it going through a difficult economic time.

True Confessions

What gets you up in the morning: My people at work, and knowing that I?m going to move the ball forward today.

Like least about job: I?ve learned to love it all, and it?s a blessing to be able to come in and run this place every day. I don?t take it for granted ? I?m one lucky businessman.

Pet peeve: Don?t be late.

If you could meet anyone, it would be: At the moment, Jerry Richardson. I?d wish for him to get well soon and maybe ask for a story or two of his great success on and off the field. Go Panthers!

Most respected competitor: I give a tip of the hat to Saul and Jordan Pohn of First Residential Mortgage Network. They?ve built one of the best midsized mortgage banks in the country and gave me the guiding principles of running a successful mortgage business.

First choice of a new career: Fiddle player for any great touring band. Music is life.

Favorite quote: ?Life is short ? gotta go for it!? ? Unknown.

Favorite cause: This year it was BeardsBeCause.com. Scott Doer and his partner have built from scratch a highly successful and fun charity for Charlotte.

Favorite status symbol: My well-used and broken-in pickup truck.

Favorite movies: Pulp Fiction, Trout Bum Diaries.

Favorite way to spend free time: Fly-fishing.
