How to raise responsible teens

Raising responsible teens takes years of guidance, not to mention a handful of patience.  As parents we watch our adorable, young kids grow into eye-rolling, sassy teenagers leaving us to wonder what exactly happened to them and why they insist on acting so crazy at times.  At some point every parent gets the joy of experiencing this eyebrow-raising phenomenon as if the birthing process and sleepless nights weren't enough.

One of our challenges with teens is that they have realized that there is independence to be had and many seek to obtain it.  This new found freedom is marked with excitement and the anticipation of exploration, especially in the discovery of oneself.  The days of being fully micro-managed by an adult are gradually transformed as teens gain access into this new uncharted territory.  As parents we see our teenagers being irresponsible when in fact many are just overjoyed and focused on the freedom we've now given them.

There are different avenues we can venture down in an effort to drive our kids towards being responsible members of society.  We can continue to micro-manage them at the risk of stifling their natural growth tendencies or we can accept the changes and help instill in them the overall benefits of being responsible.

If we accept their freedom and view it as something positive, we can encourage them to be accountable and make appropriate decisions.  Entrepreneurship is one area that not only teaches teens how to be responsible, but it provides them with numerous benefits they can obtain all on their own.

Think of some of the skill sets that owning a business provides:  responsibility, risk-taking, planning, problem-solving, communication, creativity, financial literacy, time management, leadership and decision-making abilities.  Teens can learn how to seek opportunity, improve their math skills and even gain heightened self-esteem.  Running their own business belongs to them and is something positive over which they have control.  Learning how to be responsible for their actions becomes a natural result as they follow through on promises made in their business efforts.
