Websites Are Like A Car Salesperson
This is one of my favorite posts from 2007. It was originally created as a kinda of FAQ page on a basically static website. The website offered a WYSIWYG editor. This meant that updating the site that didn't require HTML coding or related problems but it also did not allow for commenting.
I have used this example of the car salesperson often when I am discussing website marketing. I am a big fan of what is called a sales funnel. I believe it should be used on almost all websites. The emphasis here is that your web pages should be developed in a way that brings your website visitor to make a purchasing decision when they are using your site. For those in sales this process is known as a features and benefits presentation. In print is sometimes referred to as creating a sales funnel.
Sales funnels have three well defined elements with a beginning (features), a middle (the benefits), and end (the close by asking for the sale.) To explain this concept I like to refer to the car salesperson, as my example.
Now, to the original post updated a bit!
Salespeople sell that's their job and we all know this. Well, a website should be no different. It's all about selling or should be all about selling even if you are merely providing information. You want the reader to make a decision. It makes very little difference whether its products, services, or your ideas. You must be actively selling to succeed in website marketing or selling in general. Just throwing facts and descriptions on your website is wasted effort. You should always consider the beginning, the middle, and the end.
I tell this to all of my potential clients. Imagine that you are going to visit a new car or truck lot or showroom. When you encounter the salesperson they will do several things during your visit without fail or they are history. They will always start their sales pitch by explaining all the new features of the vehicle that they are presenting. They then will explain the benefits of those features. Finally, they will ask you for the sale.
That's why I compare websites to an auto salesperson. It is all about good old basic sales 101. It is often described as a features and benefits presentation. You know to expect this when you go to the car dealer. This is what you will likely encounter along the way. You will hear about all the new bells and whistles. Then the salesperson will break it down to how this will benefit you. Then there comes the closing pitch. In this process you will have to make a buying decision.
The salespersons job is to sell. You as a website owner are a seller and you
need to be selling. Sadly, very few websites sell. This is because most
websites are created without input from a sales marketing professional.
So let me ask you this. How many websites have you visited that do a complete sales presentation? It is likely that you have never seen a good sales presentation on the web.
A truly great sales presentation on a website needs to be a well thought plan. Thus you should consider hiring a professional. But sadly most website owners and website developers overlook this aspect of creating a powerful and successful website. Simply put, creating content that was developed to sell will increase your bottom line and I like that benefit.
