How to Be an Effective Communicator
We all Communicate in one way or another, but are you really an Effective Communicator? Here's a little test to see if You are an Effective Communicator or not. 1. When you speak to someone do you make eye contact...or do you try to find other things to occupy your time? 2. When you speak to someone is your attention on the individual or are you thinking about what else you could be doing at the moment? 3. When you are speaking to someone do you feel that you are making a connection with them...or is it Just alot of HOT AIR? My Personal discovery of being an Effective communicator started in the Beauty Industry. I was in business for myself as a Nail Artist and when your business is based on how well you can relate to someone else, you can become a very fast learner! 　 The One Rule I Always Follow...
Is first treat others the way I want to be treated and to also be able to reverse roles and put myself in someone elses shoes. Yea...I got hurt and it isn't always easy to do...but for giving my undivided attention to my clients, I built a very substantial client base and went from 0 to booking 6-12 months ahead for my Appointments!
What most people don't understand is that just talking to someone is not necessarily communicating with them. When you are truly communicating with another person, conversation is taken to another level...no matter how long or short the conversation.
I spent a few years doing Market Research for the Biggest Theme Park in FL ,(Guess Who...LOL!) because of the time frame that was allowed to conduct my research and the great number of people, effective communication was essential!
If you cannot capture the attention of someone in the first 3-15 seconds, forget it....GAME OVER! Even more difficult was the fact that I had to validate my reason for interrupting the guest vacations so I could ask a few questions,( Imagine that...LOL!)
This is Where I Learned How to Be An Effective Communicator...
1. When I approached someone to ask a question, I would always smile and ask how their day was going, ( you have to give to get back).
2. I always make eye contact when speaking to someone,( this builds trust and also lets the one you are speaking to know that you are interested in them as a person).
3. After finishing my questions I would ask if there is anything that I could help them with...directions and so on,(this lets the person know that you give them something for their time).
4. And last but not least, I would thank them for their time,( Remember time is precious...the one thing you can't recapture when it's gone so use it wisely!)
To Recap...
Here are some very simple rules to remember when you are communicating with others.
--EYE CONTACT-- If your in a large group share your gaze with multipal individuals, and if your speaking on the phone, the tone of voice you use lets the other person know if you are really paying attention or not,( Like when you where a kid and your parents are trying to tell you what to do...You know what I mean!)
--PAY ATTENTION-- Make a connection to the individual or group of persons you are speaking to the same way you want someone else to connect with you,( Just think of how you can talk to your best friend for hours and it feels like a few moments...That is making a Connection...Effective Communication!
--VALUE OTHERS-- You CANNOT be an EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATOR unless you are able to value Others. Don't treat someone like they are just another number...take the time to let someone know that you appreciate their efforts,( Especially if they are helping to make you MONEY!!!) Always value others and you will reap GREAT REWARDS!
