Splash Pages and Traffic Generation

by Celesta Penney Business Bookkeeping Consultant Traffic generation is one of the biggest concerns for web owners today.  Every day there are more and more websites fighting for the attention of the millions of visitors online.  The vocabulary has become increasingly more difficult to keep up with especially if you have been out of the game for a while.

One term that has come out of the internet age is “splash page“.  When I first heard this term, I had no idea what they were talking about and realized quickly that I didn’t know as much as I thought.  But then I went to my favorite look up site, wikipedia to see what it was and how it can be used in the most beneficial way.

So what is a Splash Page?  In my research, I found that the splash page was originally used by webmasters and programmers as temporary page  to put up when the site was taken down for maintenance.  It is a short page with small attractive content in the middle and is used to communicate a short burst of information to visitors.  More recently, it is being used much like commercials on radio and television.  The splash page is designed to get the reader’s attention, and drive them to the site.  Many even have a click through so the visitor can go straight there while they are interested. 

In traffic generation, splash pages are most useful  They are fast loading and easy to look at.  A properly designed splash page will grab the user’s attention and prompt them to click though to the site.  Traffic exchanges prefer users to use these kinds of pages as they are quick loading and generate the most clickthroughs.  When I am surfing for credits, I find that splash pages do not require scrolling and get their point across quickly.  At that point, I either want to go to the site, or I don’t.  The splash page did its job.

So if you are trying to use traffic generators to your best possible benefit, create a splash page to display.  A few traffic exchanges will help you with splash generation and there are some really handy splash page generating software packages out there as well.  Don’t underestimate the value of a short page.
