mixed-martial-arts training in mississauga
There's a lot to be said about where mma or mixed martial arts started from, who started it, and how it started. Personally, I believe it’s a collection of people, movements in the martial arts world and the demand for new ways to improve yourself physically. MMA has actually been around for centuries. It was once called ‘Pankration’. Pankration means “a complete contestâ€. At the time it involved boxing and wrestling. The only way to win was by making your opponent give up or by death. There were neither weight divisions nor time limits. Referees were armed with stout rods or switches to enforce the rules against biting and gouging. The contest itself continued uninterrupted until one of the combatants surrendered, suffered unconsciousness, or was killed.
I think one of the main contributors is none other than the master, Bruce Lee. He was the first martial artist to revolutionize the 'old ways’ of the martial arts world. He studied fencing footwork along with boxing, and combined his knowledge in Gung Fu to create his own art now known as Jeet Kune Do. Jeet Kune Do is where it all began for me. The main philosophy is to 'take what is useful for you, and dispose of the rest.'
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu dominated most of the early days of the UFC because no one had ever heard of it, and not many have trained in Jiu-Jitsu at the time. Slowly but surely everyone started catching on and started to train very differently. Wrestlers found out that they could quickly ‘disarm’ a boxer by taking them quickly to the ground and submitting them by locks and choke holds rather than hitting. Suddenly kickboxers and boxers and pugilists alike knew that they had to know at least some form of ground fighting in order to survive in the octagon. All of a sudden, hitters can now diffuse the takedown of a wrestler simply by learning a couple of anti-grappling techniques, staying on their feet and duking it out so to speak. Wrestlers started to box, boxers started to wrestle, grapplers started to learn how to hold others down and do something called ‘ground and pound’ whereby you keep your enemy in a poor position on the ground and proceed to submit them by continuously hitting them until they submit or tap. And now mma is known worldwide and is gaining more audiences and becoming more accepted as time goes by. I’m really hoping it keeps taking off and that there will be more ‘leagues’ to hold mma events. In MMA or mix martial arts, they wear lighter gloves. Wearing lighter gloves sometimes discourages the athletes to punch as much as they would in a boxing match due to the fact that they may break their fingers/ hands. In MMA athletes are not subjected to constant head hits which can result in brain damage. They can submit or make their opponent give up by means of other techniques. Great wrestlers and grapplers know to try and take their opponent down as quickly as possible to ‘disarm’ them. They can then proceed to putting their opponent in a less favorable position and submit them with joint locks, choke holds, and by hitting enough so that the referee stops the fight.
The UFC or Ultimate Fighting Challenge almost did not survive. Because of the nature of the sport, there were many people who did not approve of the sport and deemed it to be too extreme. Of course, human nature is to fear what you don’t understand. Luckily, the UFC was able to survive and now continues to become more accepted by the general public. It is still to be accepted all across Canada, although that is also changing slowly. Every year, more and more organizations are popping up and giving opportunities for athletes to prove themselves against others. This sport truly is “a complete contest†as you cannot only be a good boxer. You must also learn how to defend from grappling attacks or else, get your punches neutralized, taken to the ground and be submitted.
