   Ok I am going to give you a brief introduction.There are generally 4 types of search engines. They are:

      1)Crawler based;

      2)Directories;

      3)Hybrid engines; and

      4)Pay per performance and paid inclusion.

 

  Brief description:

    1)Crawler based search engines: They are also known as traditional or common search engines.Such search engines use special software also known as spiders,crawlers,bot,robot to crawl a site. Example can be Google.

   2) Directories: Most of directories require manual submission and they use certain mechanism like CAPTCHA in order to prevent auto submission. The sites are reviewed by editors(human) and they decide whether or not to include a site depending on various criteria.Example:DMOZ

  3)Hybrid engines: Such engines are also known as META engines.They use other engines search results.They combine search results from a number of search engines. Example: Metasearch.com

 4) Pay per performance: Such search engines charge a sum of fee to keep your site listed or top ranked for keywords of your choice.
