The Virtue of Re-Cycling.
Re-Cycling. In the short term it is the getting used to a better way of dealing with waste. In the mid term it is a boon to the economy. In the long term it is a positive effect on the quality of life.
Recycling uses less energy to produce the same products compared to producing from raw materials such as ore and oil.
In the event of a civil emergency, every New Zealand household is expected to be prepared to go three days without support from water, food and energy suppliers.
I wonder how many households are literally throwing away the everyday recyclables that can make all the difference.
Definition of Recyclables;
- Electronics
TV. sets, Stereo Speakers, Cell Phones, etc.. I have fun taking bits and pieces and making things from them. I do this in my work-shop at home. I make flotsam and jetsam into art, tools and el budget sound systems.
The thing that gets to me is that most of the hardware inside the defunct electronics is solid state, recyclable and indeed still a long way from the end of its working life - ends up in the landfill.
Do you know how much water is contaminated during the production of just one desktop computer? How much hardware is being dumped, where good second hand I.T. could easily be supplied to schools in less fortunate regions, or even to less fortunate people in your own country.
Did you know that (L) Vodafone has a cell phone recycling service? ;
“Here in New Zealand we’re always working on new initiatives to help keep our country clean and green, and mobile recycling is one of our major focuses.
There are literally thousands of unused, old or damaged mobiles lurking in drawers all over the country. All of these can be recycled or rebuilt and reused.
Simply bring your mobile phone in to one of our retail outlets, or send it free to Vodafone Recycling Programme, private Bag 92222, Auckland Mail Centre
There’s a recycling programme available for your school or office too. If you’d like more details, email us on recycling.nz@vodafone.com
You can also deposit your unwanted phones in any Telecom store in New Zealand.
- Kitchen waste
Can go to the pigs, chickens or be made in to top-soil in a composter (composting reduces kerbside rubbish by 30%). To avoid problems with vermin, do not put meat scraps in the compost.
Kitchen waste also includes packaging. Metal tins/cans, Mochonna jars, aluminium, type 1 & 2 plastic, cleaning liquids bottles, cardboard, circulars (the "junk mail" advertising from the letter box), and glass are a few examples of recyclables.
Of course, not all countries, cities or abodes have such luxuries as a recycling program, pigs chickens or a composter. Sometimes I wonder how many people don't even have access to a kitchen.
- Newspaper
Can be used as insulation, fuel, absorb spills, wrap food scraps to minimise fly infestations, recycled on collection day.
- Slightly damaged items
Scratches and dents give them that stylish weathered look.
- Plastics
Soft drink bottles/3l juice bottles (for water), plastic shopping bags, bread bags, Margarine containers, 2l Ice cream containers, jars, plastic containers, etc.
In fact, any plastic/glass/metal container has value as a storage media for food, bits and pieces, etc. It also has value back at the smelter, so to say. I think it is a matter of perspective. Is this rubbish or is this treasure?
not all people will be enthusiastic about a whole lot of "treasure" nicely set out in cardboard boxes, taking up half of the household storage space. These types ought to be sending as much to the recycler as possible if they cannot stand being in the midst (gorillas in the mist?) of all these priceless items.
A basic household survival plan;
See the inside of the phone book for Civil Defense information in New Zealand.
You and your family can get along for quite a while without food, but only for a short time without water. Some of your water requirements could be met by making use of the water in home hot-water tanks and toilet tanks.
If there is any question about the safety or cleanliness of the water you intend to use, it must first be purified. The safest method of purifying water is to boil it vigorously for 1 to 3 minutes to destroy bacteria that might be present.
To improve the taste of the water after it has been boiled, pour the boiled water from one clean container to another several times.
Any household bleach solution that contains hypochlorite as its only active ingredient will purify water easily and inexpensively. Add 8 drops of bleach to each gallon of clear water in any clean container in which it can be thoroughly mixed by stirring or shaking.
Use double the amount of bleach to cloudy water. Then, let the mixture stand for 30 minutes. The smell or taste of chlorine in the water thus treated is a sign of safety.
You can also use ordinary household 2-percent tincture of iodine to purify small quantities of water. Add 12 drops for each gallon of clear water, 24 drops for cloudy water and stir thoroughly.
Stockpiled foods should be in cans, jars, or sealed paper or plastic containers. Select foods that will last for months without refrigeration and can be eaten with little or no cooking.
Take into consideration the needs and preferences of family members, storage space, and the ability to rotate stored foods in family meals. Familiar foods are likely to be more acceptable in times of stress.
Whenever possible, choose cans and jars in sizes that will fill your family’s needs for only one meal. This is especially desirable for meat, poultry, fish, vegetables, evaporated milk, and other foods that deteriorate rapidly after a container is opened.
Although a gas cooker and bottle are valuable, stoves and furnaces ought to use natural fuel such as wood or solar energy. Electricity can be generated from solar panels, windmills, or manually rotated automotive generators and stored in twelve-volt batteries. DC into AC converters are available from electronic and automotive centres.
Brainstorma Recycler
I expect that in the future, products and packaging would be mandatorily re-cycled. This could reduce / eliminate the energy spent on resources, human time, ecological consequences, etc.
I would like to enjoy returning my used hardware to the supplier, who would return it to the manufacturer, so they could harvest the good components and send the waste to the particle beam forge, where a Particle Beam Forge (disruptor / molecular-reconfigurer) turns the waste material into sand, synthetic plasti steel, new magnets, etc Impossible? Just how "lean" can Lean Production get?
I heard that someone is already using such a machine, turning one form of matter into another. As to whether that is true or not is yet to be confirmed.
