Selecting the Right Doman Name

In my last blog post, we discussed how Google calculates the page rank of your web site based upon keywords and links to your site from other web sites.

Google also examines the domain name of the web site and compares this to the text between the first <h1> and <h2> tags encountered on the web page. Let's examine a site and determine how we could increase it's page rank with the appropriate domain name. Point your browser to this blog web site by clicking here. It should open in another window so we can switch back and forth.

First, let's look at the title of the page by examining the top of the browser window or the tab on newer browsers. The name of this web site is "Creating an Awesome Home Business". Now have a look at the domain name. Notice how the domain name doesn't really tell us much about the site or it's content. This page could rank much higher if it had the appropriate domain name.

Based upon the name of the web site, a domain such as www.awesomehomebusiness.net or www.createanawesomebusiness.com would tell us, and Google, more about the content on the site. This one simple step could boost the position of this site significantly.

Now try this with your own web site. Take a look at what you have named your web site, the text between the <h1> and <h2> tags on the page, and how this relates to your domain name. Does it all match and flow? If not, you may need to register an appropriate domain name.

But I already have a domain name for my web site?

This is not a problem. You can have as many domain names as you like, all pointing to the same web site location. If we go back to our sample site, this person could purchase one or both of the domain names and setup domain forwarding from their account, with domain masking and be able to maintain the traffic from past efforts while boosting and improving their position with their new domain names.
